My wife is Portuguese, so I have some experience of this - from the very nice gentleman presuming that because she has an accent, she must be retarded so best speak slow and LOUD, to the equally nice neighbour who, in a heated discussion about boundaries said "You might be something in your own country, but you're just a foreigner here!". Actual incidents, not reports and from BEFORE the vote. With the constant sh*t-stirring of UKIP and certain newspapers, it doesn't take much to provoke an us-and-them situation.

I also did not conflate xenophobia with nostalgia - although they can work together. Those who have not seen (and have not been shown) any positive outcome from the EU and who don't know that the world has changed can be forgiven for harking back to simpler times - those who know better but still encourage them to do so cannot.

I am pro-EU, but it needs significant reform - in the same way that the UK system has flaws and needs reform too. However, what worries me more are the sharks and wide-boys who have come out of the closet since Brexit was announced, continuing the lie that the "experts" are wrong and that they know best - and actually just looking out for themselves.
Anecdote is not data.

Speaking slowly to a foreigner is not xenophobia or deciding they are retarded, it is someone being polite and wanting to ensure they are clear.

In heated arguments people reach for the most abusive thing they can say, whether it's about someones colour, nationality, sexuality etc - I don't condone it but it isn't indicative of xenophobic behaviour in general.

Significant reform - made me laugh out loud, pro-EU types have been saying that for years, decades in fact, and it still never moves forward, preferring instead to shovel billions of euros into small farmers and then have the whole parliament decamp up the road each month too vote, costing hundreds of millions a year. Reform in a sensible timeframe isn't possible until power is further centralised.

Yeah, this is a bag of shite. At least in the EU bullshit thread I can skip to the end if I'm not quoted and save myself for a well placed shitpost, but I actually like to participate in this one.

Still, while we have an audience - **** Brexit, **** UKIP and **** small minded nationalism.
