I’m British, and have never drank a cuppa. I was a bit spoilt, and my mum always let me drink squash. I started drinking coffee at about 18. I do drink iced tea though!

I almost dropped my half-litre mug in shock! I well recall my auntie Lizzie, whose gallon teapot was constantly on the go! (and that's the imperial version, not the short gallon!)

One thing that annoys me in Portugal is that any infusion is called "tea".... this in the country that can lay claim to popularising the cuppa. The number of times I get caught off-guard by someone asking "Would you like a tea?" and then continuing..... "I have Tilia, Peppermint, Mint, Camomile....."

- Having said which, the prevalence of UHT milk usually ruins a decent cuppa anyway!

That reminds me, I don't take milk with tea but have never, ever, taken milk with my coffee.

The latter is a possibility, if the coffee is good, the former is just heresy.

If you don't have milk, you cannot argue over what goes into the cup first.

It is like settling the argument in Gulliver's Travels by eating scrambled eggs instead!!

Having milk in a hot cuppa is part of a "relaxing" cup of tea.
Having milk and sugar in a cuppa is " oh my God I' m in shock/ hurt/ upset" cup of tea.
Having neither is just wrong!

And yep black coffee is fine. Especially when you need to get your brain in gear.

When from a teabag, yes..... otherwise milk first, in order to train your hand-eye coordination.

Nothing teaches you to judge volume correctly better than the threat of treacle or overmilked tea.......

Back in the day, Irish tea seemed to be whole leaves, folded, whereas British tea was bits. Then the teabag came along and proved that made British tea look macho!

My ma always described weak tea as being "shamrock"...... three leaves to a pot!

All this talk about tea, reminds me of when Mum&Dad were having their bungalow partially redecorated in Bristol a number of years ago. As they were pensioners, they were able to get a grant from the council, who sent a 'special' help-the-aged team of young decorators to perform the task.
Apparently within minutes of them starting, Mum asked, "Would you like a cup of tea?" So before any pots of paint had been opened or even before any scraping had commenced, they all sat down for a cuppa. Long story short, about every 15mins or so, Mum would ask the same question to the young lad nearest to her. Reply was always positive, and all the others joyfully downed tools, took a seat and joined the tea-party, with Mum only too delighted to be playing the host.
According to my father, they were very amateurish and much to his annoyance Mum kept this up with the kettle hardly off the boil for about 3 days. Dad didn't think they did a very good job, but Mum was visibly pleased, saying, "They were all lovely young boys, and I think they really enjoyed my tea!" Bless her.

Agreed!

Using a teapot, with milk first in the cup, is the more civilized way.
