This may be unwelcome information.......

I have several friends who have had single implants in the UK and in Portugal, they seem to have had no problems. However, I know of only two who had full replacement implants, one in the UK and the other in Portugal, these were not so successful.

Both are women, the "younger" is in her late 60s the elder in her mid 70s. The first (in Portugal) went through an entire year of hell and ended up paying twice the quoted price to achieve an acceptable outcome. The other (in the UK) might as well have thrown her money into a hole in the ground..... she now has standard dentures.

The first lady had a problem with fit, which caused her excrutiating pain both with the teeth in and out - I know, I saw her at her worst.and she was almost suicidal. She was travelling 120km to the dentist every fortnight for a year before she stopped. However, whilst she now uses the teeth on a regular basis... at home she doesn't, which suggests to me she's still not entirely comfortable with them. The second lady was fine at first, until about 9 months later when an implant literally dropped out of he jaw and could not be replaced. This was followed by another and finally a third..... at which stage the whole process was unworkable so she had to have the remainder removed. Luckily, this treatment was covered as part of the agreed price, but she's still short £8k for nothing but a deal of discomfort....

I recall someone else discovering, after the event, that they were allergic to titanium and having to have significant rework done..... So, to me, the jury is still out on such procedures.

I had a 'full rehabilitation - lower jaw' (oral surgeon speak for full implants to replace lower teeth, they can charge more if they fancy it up).

Had it done in 2015 and haven't had a problem at all. The only thing I wish is that I'd more carefully considered the options I was given of the toothy set being fixed on the implants, or one that could be removed. I thought that as I was paying so much I wanted permanent teeth, dammit! But spending inordinate amounts of time to get underneath the fixed prosthesis to clean there makes me wish I'd opted for the removable one.

Cost was $50,000. I still shudder.

I had thought of this.

But of course this is why you need a good dentist rather than a clinic that specialises only in slapping the teeth in without considering what is best for each individual person. Apparently a main thing to consider is the state of the bone in the jaw, which affects what sort of implant should be inserted. And some people are not suitable at all.

My brother went to Turkey a couple of years ago for the full monty. Said he was quoted over £30,000 in the UK.

He had 2 trips to Turkey. First to have the prep work done and the screws and temporary teeth installed, then later to have the job finished.

He is over the moon with the results and paid under £10,000 including flights and accommodation for 2 (twice).

Hadn't thought of Turkey. Do you know where he went exactly?

DentoCareMed, Antalya

He just confirmed 9,000 Euros not including travel & accommodation.

His mate is out there now getting his done.

For upper and lower jaw? That's extraordinarily cheap.

OH might be complicated case.

Sorry, the lady with the failed implants went to a UK regional specialist and had bone density testing and treatment before the implants...... but they still failed after a few months. .The other went to a specialist clinic in the Algarve.... those impants worked but caused pain for a long time. Nieither of them went to a backstreet dealer or looked for a cheap deal, both clinics were recommended by their own dentists..... and whilst one has had a "successful" outcome, it took multiple visits - which might be something to consider before deciding to get the work done away from home..

However, by all means ignore the information.....

I'm more of an information collector, more than an ignorer.

Anyway, it's the OH's teeth so his decision.
