I think there are positives for both US and UK Christmas traditions. We try to incorporate the best of both worlds, esp for the children. My company has the same policy as in the UK--anyone can work or may take off whatever days they want, as long as they have the hols time to do it. Here we have Friday and Monday off as the paid hols, when I automatically thought it would be Mon-Tuesday (forgetting about Boxing Day not being a day here).

Weird, I was NEVER given Xmas week off in the UK - then again, I DID work for the bloody Govt. I'm off next week though

I enjoy Xmas more here, to be honest. It helps that I am in the Chicago area and there is (usually) some snow but I like the way everyone gathers at the in-laws for Xmas brekkie and the opening of prezzies and hangs around all day.

Yeah? I'm off 11

Today a half day an all.

............'course it bites a bit that its all unpaid, but its really worth it.

Anyway,

Who does it better? Neither. There are some shared traditions-but given the English Xmas year after year, I expect I'd miss a fair few US habits. Like Jen said, its fun to meld the two together, for the kids. Mine know about crackers, boxing day, mince pies, all that. We leave Scotch and shortbread out instead of milk and cookies too........

You must have had the crappest government job of all time, I often got 2 1/2 weeks off for Christmas, much of it grant time off, not coming off your entitlement. UK Govt normally makes up for mediocre wages with decent holiday allowance.

Default 10 Reasons why Christmas is better in the UK

1. Hot mince pies and carol singers.
2. HOA "guidelines" for decorations.
3. The Queens Speech and Guns of Naverone not Bush then NFL.
4. People wishing you "Merry Christmas" not "Happy Holidays".
5. Mulled wine rather than Egg Nog.
6. Marshmallows in hot chocolate, not the vegetables.
7. Presidential pardons for turkeys (but not people).
8. Getting pissed at the office party and snogging under the mistletoe (without getting fired or sued)
9. Boxing Day spent on the sofa not in the office.
10 12 days of Christmas not 6 weeks to Valentines.

There are many things the US does better than the UK, but Christmas isn't one of them.
