I used to talk to Holly all the time, mainly because it made me smile that she wagged her tail so much while I was talking to her. I miss her....

My podengos look at me intently when I speak to them.

Probably thinking "Why the hell is he talking to me in a foreign language!"

You'll be surprised at the kind of dogs in the shelters, we got our Pointer/Australian Shepherd mix from a shelter, surprised she wasn't snapped up before we got her (she was 7 months old when we got her). Turned out, she had a 'naughty' label attached, when actually the issue was she just needs lots of exercise due to her breed!
I think you are right, they are treated better now, with the fostering. I even thought about fostering, but I would rather pick one I really want. I have never been to a real shelter, with loads of dogs in cages. I think I would come home with a pack

I certainly wouldn't do what a friend of my husband just did, and get one from an Amish puppy farm. She spent $800 on the puppy, I can get a rescue puppy for less than that and I won't be encouraging people to make money from dogs suffering. I wasn't impressed by her, she said she didn't like to ask too many questions and she couldn't say no to her daughter who had fallen in love with it. It's beyond belief that supposedly intelligent people can be so dumb.......

I got a lovely PM today about Murphy (thank you )

It was just over 2 months after this photo was taken that we got the horrible news about his kidney cancer, and our beautiful 12 year old mate went to sleep. We miss him so much, every single day.

I am so sorry Murphy is no longer with you, he looked lovely in that photo. It doesn't matter how old or young they are, it's still heart breaking when it happens. Even getting another dog doesn't change you missing the previous ones.

Best wishes.....

Thanks becks x Murph was in such good health, we (and his vet) thought we'd have him for at least another couple of years. Still can't talk about him without tears, bloody daft old lady I am.

I've just read your earlier post about losing Holly, and I thought the way you explained about waiting until you missed having a dog, rather than getting one to replace Holly, made so much sense. Looking forward to seeing your new furry friend, who will be a very fortunate girl/boy indeed

You aren't daft, when I had my Bernese Mountain dogs put down they were my first dogs and for months and months I couldn't talk about it at all. Having them both go in 24 hours was hard, especially as the youngest was only 7 years old. But the last 2 have been equally hard and I thought it would be easier the more times you go through it. Holly has been gone for 3 years and I still well up at times....

But on a lighter note, the Great Pyrenees rescue emailed me today, we are talking Monday - so excited, it's like Christmas

I never post on here anymore but am breaking that rule just once in view of the subject of this beautiful thread. It was exactly a year today that we lost my beautiful boy Jake/aka Stinky on B. Expats.

I particularly was immensely close to him and miss him hugely even now. I just read through the thread back then about him and shouldnt have done as I was in tears again, a year later.

These photos were some of my favourites- the Cowgirl one particularly, taken during his Stinky's 12 days of Christmas ordeal! The toys were the ones given at his last Christmas which were donated to way less spoilt dogs at the SPCA along with all his other stuff. Dogs on here are beautiful and I couldnt resist this single post. Oink I know loved him. I was also sorry about Spouse's loss of beautiful old Murphy. I knew just how you felt.

Not just dogs.........
Reading these posts reminds me that it will soon be 5 years since we lost Dr. Pedro Coelho, our nethie house rabbit. He was the most beautiful, innocent creature and kept us fascinated for all the time we were privileged to be with him.

Yes, you did know SP, and scouse and I were so grateful for your comfort. I think your post of Jake's last day was the first time I've ever full on cried at an internet post. What a lovely boy he was

I really miss you and Snoop posting although I fully understand your reasons. Your contributions to BE were so valuable and helped so many people. I hope all's going well for you both.

What are the names of the other 2?

The puppy, like all puppies, is so cute. It is being watched rather quizzically

The Basset Hound is Barney, the black lab mix is Benson.
They have been with us a while and made the journey across the pond a few years back.

Barney is a great name for a Basset.
