I have just signed Izzy up for Puppy Training classes, first one is Saturday. I've never been to classes before. We lived in the Yorkshire country side when we had our last dog, we could walk for miles and not see another person or dog. When we did come across dogs she wasn't overly keen on being social, she just ignored them if they kept sniffing at her she would bare her teeth and growl. Suffice to say we didn't make many doggie friends.

Our new pup is already more social as I take her to school twice a day and she gets mobbed by the kids, we also walk out for coffee on a weekend and take her...

The main thing I want to master is lead walking, my last dog was really strong and pulled on her lead constantly, even when she had been out running for 4 hours (seriously). The new pup is already showing signs of pulling, I've tried the stop walking lark which seems to be working, but when you have to get to school for a certain time it can be hard to enforce. Oh and jumping up to greet you, that needs mastering too.

I'm sure it will be a fun class

Get a harness... Daisy can pull alot when we go hike new places, her harness is like magic as even if she is pulling it doesn't have any real effect, and I feel I have alot more control. Gentle Leaders are really good too, the head harness or the body ones, I am sure your trainer will have some ideas.

We did the puppy classes and the obedience thing too, it is well worth it to have a good mannered dog, plus it helped enormously with the socialising... Now I do agility with her once a week, TBH I sometimes think she is only doing it to humour me

Alas- she still tends to jump up on people, mainly once she gets to know them - I got the point where it was like f**k it, at least she hasn't got them by the throat in a headlock besides once she has done the meet and greet she stops and just leaves them alone!! As she is getting older I am noticing she is doing it less and less... by the time she is 15 she will be perfect!!

We had a harness for our last dog, and Izzy has one too. Made not a blind bit of difference, in fact if anything made it worse with the first one, gave her something more solid to pull against. We did live on a very steep hill, so it was to be encouraged on occassion

Like you, I'm willing to let her get away with some things, just not everything

She loves to go to Petco and point out all the treats she would like (in her dreams, maybe!) and snuffle at all the soft toys as she passes. We were in the queue for the checkout when a little overgrown rat wearing a fluffy outfit started snarling and barking at her from a distance. The owner could not control the beast, so eventually picked it up and put it in her coat pocket. My dog gave one single bark at this horrible little critter, and everyone turned and stared at my dog! I politely suggested to my dog that this was not acceptable behaviour in any circumstance, so she turned to sit and look at me, wagging her tail. - At least she seemed to see the funny side of this...

Picking up a little dog dog who is aggressive does nothing for anyone - it should learn like every other dog, whatever the size, how to behave in public - hiding it away just exacerbates the problem for all dogs and their owners.
I love going to dog training because you see dogs of all shapes and sizes and the owners all trying to train them. The small dogs there act the same as the big dogs because they are trained the same way.

I remember when I had my GSD these two horrible scottie dogs attacked him one was snapping at the back and the other was hanging off his neckWhen we got them off the scottie dogs were picked up and cuddled as if it was my dog that had attacked them!Sue.

Mittens kitten - so called because her front paws look like oven gloves. Hmm Maybe should have named her oven gloves then eh?

I was reminded of you the other night, in the book I was reading a hit man came back to his apartment after shooting 2 people and clicked on his favorite internet site of watching kittens falling asleep. I either thought it was based on you, or you are a published author and failed to tell us

I am not a published author, of hit man stories...

And, no, I'm not a hit man, either.

You need an anti pull harness, I use the gentle leader one for Henry. Non anti pull harnesses won't make any difference.

If kittens had opposable thumbs, most folks would be redundant.

Except for some of us. Those who welcome our new, feline, overlords.

Eli won't pull, when hes on the lead he just walks alongside without pulling. I think he must have watched the dog whisperer too much when he was a puppy. We do however have a doggie backpack for him which he wears with no problem at all and comes in very handy for carrying food and water on day hikes.
