New Land Rover Defender is here.

As a vehicle it looks alright, but at 40K sterling for the 90, the price is a bit steep.

As a Defender, I am not digging it.

Looks like the ugly relative of the LR4 I used to have.

Hammond says it is of monocoque construction, which also doesn't seem appropriate for a utilitarian 4x4 vehicle. The old Defender, the Toyota Landcruiser and pickups are all body-on-frame.

With a monocoque / unibody chassis how are they going to offer various body configuration options?

40,000 pounds? That's just wrong.

Proper Land Rover - a working vehicle.

No advantage over a Toyota and more expensive. Pointless.

The 90 is pure boner alert.
The 110 isn't really, because it's just not quite anything.

They got a Discovery designer to design the Defender whilst on crack cocaine, It looks like a special kind of useless on the battlefield which is why it's no good to me. Anything a Somalian Dickpotato wants to gold plate is probably not going to be a very good utilitarian get about.

You can literally see from the design it's going to be fantastic off road, then add the technology and decent size engines and hey presto.

I love the fact it's upsetting so many.

I like the 90. The 110 is always going to be too long. Shame they didn't go will a 100 as that's proven as the ultimate 4x4 length.

Looks wise they'll be like the Jeep JK's and JL's.... I'll hate them at the beginning but as styling tweaks are made through subsequent editions and aftermarket mods are released I think it'll start looking pretty bad ass.

Price is steep and it'd be interesting to see how much they end up being here tax free (ish).

As for Monocoque Vs ladder chassis.... I get your point and traditionally you are correct, however, I'm guessing that technology in design will be able to remove the difference to a point where they're negligible..... it is only Old Landies and Jeeps that still use a ladder chassis after all.... Land Cruisers, Patrols etc all seem to do OK with a monocoque.

I have the opposite opinion. With a unibody construction and expensive price tag for a utility vehicle, it looks like LR sought to design a lifestyle vehicle for the general public from the get go.

Unibody construction would make it harder to service , repair and modify the vehicle . Insurance and owner is more likely to write off the vehicle as totaled after a major accident.

Quite. The old Defenders will be running many years after these ones have turned into so much scrap.

Toyota 4runner, the fullsize Landcruiser (called the Landcruiser 200 in Australia) and the Landcruiser 70 series are all body-on-frame. Farmers and anyone wanting a workhorse 4x4 will get the 70 series . The 200 series is also popular with UN and NGOs. The Mercedes G-Wagon and the Nissan Patrol are still body-on-frame.
