Default How the hell do you get the back off a wristwatch?

Call me thick if you must - but I can't do it short of smashing the bloody timepiece.

Last time it needed a new battery I took it to a jeweller who charged me 10 Euro.

I have the battery already in the house, they are the same ones that daughter's pocket microscope takes, but I think that me being able to tell the time when running for trains takes precedence over her looking at close up views of threads in jeans or squished mosquitoes on the wall (though the amount of blood they take from us is astonishing when looked at in zoom mode).

So far all I've managed to do is scratch the stainless steel back. Do jewellers have a special tool? Is there a special knack?

At the moment I think I should just go to Hung Li Chinese Bazzar and get a new, cheap, summer watch with battery included for just 3 Euro.

A photo of the back would help here, but generally you will see some little notchs in the bit that unscrews - this is where a special tool will be able to engage with those and it unscrews very easily.

Buy the little tool and start a new business venture for yourself! Charge 8 Euros and they'll be flocking to your door!

Thanks guys.
I do appreciate the answers.
For my expensive watch ..... I'll pay the sodding jeweller.
For a cheap, summer version, I'll go to the Chinese Bazzar.

You need a tool that looks like a small/ thin matchbox with two broad pins sticking out of the side that engage with the small indentations on opposite sides of the back.

One like this.

There are various ways into a watch. Some have screws on the back plate so that's obvious. If there are notches on the back plate, then it may unscrew. Some back plates are just press fits - you need to gently lever it off. And I think I've had at least one watch where the front came off. If it's an expensive watch probably best taking it to a jewellers or watch repairers. If it's not so expensive, I know I'd do it myself

Cheers folks.
It never even crossed my mind that the back might twist and unscrew, but I've checked now and it doesn't. I also can't see any notches so I've dropped it off at the jeweller's.

Some older Omega Seamasters are Front Loaders, I have a nice watch which is a form of front loader although you have to remove 4 screws on the rear for the front body to separate. To be fair 10 euros for a battery change could be peanuts as they may repressure test it and change the seals if it has a depth rating. When I send my watches in for a battery change they get stripped re-polished and I get them back like new.

Many expensive watches have to be sent back to the manufactures to have the battery changed.

You will need to collect the following items:

Small flat-head screwdriver
Magnifying glass or jewellers eyepiece
Small white piece of cloth (put it on the table)
Tweezers and about 6ft of thin but strong string

Now, you tie one end of the piece of string to the watch strap (the metal bit will be fine)
Tie the other end of the string to your car's rear bumper
Drive the car at speed for approx. 20-30 minutes

Result!
