That's what I thought. My cooking abilities are largely confined to toast.

Exactly! That cake plate really took my eye! Felt like watching Downton Abbey or something! I didn't know they still existed.

Just been browsing - some are stylish, others are quite simply hideous!

I have a couple of "cut" (more like moulded) glass cake stands. one was a wedding gift, the other I picked up in Goodwill for $5. They do make serving a cake just a little more special.

1860s ?

I should probably point out that I'm not a dessert person! I can't say no to french-fries, poutine, pasta, Asian food ... but when it comes to desserts, I'm not drawn to them. I do enjoy a few Italian-type offerings, but I never seek them out. So seeing a piece of kitchen ware dedicated to the cause seems strange!

Yes, some are definitely hideous. I wouldn't have bothered, but the OH is into presentation.

Probably couldn't have afforded one from the 1860s, although we have had some screaming deals from Goodwill (charity shop) before now. Georgian wine glasses, for example. OH knows about this stuff, not me.

I am not usually a dessert fan when dining out, largely because I am not a great chocolate lover and far too often the dessert list headlines the chocolate based desserts with anything else as an after thought

I have just put one of these in our oven: https://www.bakefromscratch.com/sugared-jam-cake/
but rather than do the melted butter palava will just dust the top with cinnamon sugar.

Ah, me too - I stopped eating Chocolate as a teenager and never resumed. The Italians seem to do very nicely with non-chocolate, not-too-sweet stuff like pannacotta, tiramisu, etc.

I suspect if I lived near you I'd eat quite a bit more!

I don't actually make a lot of sweet stuff to eat at home, with the major exception of mince pies in December. Up until this spring if I made a cake type dessert and there was too much for just Steveq and myself. I would send the rest in to work and his R&D engineers would soon polish off the excess - they also quite happily eat my test bakes which sometimes look less presentable than I would like, though they tast just fine. Unfortunately Covid-19 has put a dampener on shared foods and also many of the hungry software guys are working from home.

Goodwill is my usual source for occasional use vintage kitchenware that I don't want to pay through the nose for
