Default Christmas 2020

What are you doing for Christmas this year? Are you doing any special/something you don’t usually do, just to brighten the dark COVID December days?

Not sure what to do about seeing daughter and granddaughter over Christmas. They could get tested just before Christmas, or we could self isolate for 10/14 days. We could use the downstairs lounge and have the French doors open. I’m torn on what to do.

Ever since I was a child, we have always put the tree up the Sunday before the 15th (dad’s birthday). I have always stuck to this routine. This year I just may put it up tomorrow, 1st Dec. I’ve decided to wear something sparkly every day in December.

Ho Ho Ho.

Younger son gets back from uni in New Mexico this Friday, so he will be with us for Christmas, elder son will presumably get Christmas Day off from his new job, which as it is a Friday means he will be with us for a couple of days. Usually we have one or more waifs and strays with us for Christmas Dinner, but that is unlikely this year unless a work colleague is really adrift.

Mince pies start getting made tomorrow, and I shall probably do more festive baking. I am also going to make some festive facemasks (very 2020 ) to bring a bit of seasonal cheer. Our Christmas tree has always gone up the day after the end of term (my parents were both schoolteachers) and comes down on Twelfth Night, but this year it may go up earlier even if it has to go on top of the flight simulator!

I have noticed a lot of exterior lights already in our neighbourhood, I think everyone is ready for some festive brightness.

Zip nada nothing planned.

If not for COVID we would mostly likely have gone to L's cousins house, they live nearby only people we know in the area but too risky with COVID.

I did put some lights on the patio a couple weeks ago though.

Not a lot. OH and I will do presents, and he will cook something because he likes to cook and is good at it. We were supposed to have my son and his girlfriend here for Christmas, but of course they are stuck in the UK so I shall be working hard to not sulk but am not feeling especially Christmassy, tbh.

However, lots of people are in the same situation or worse so maybe we need this BE Christmas thread to hang out on.

I honestly don't know. We usually have everyone round on Christmas Eve but it might just be us this year because I don't know if we even can have anyone over. As much as we'd like to though, I won't lie, it was nice not having to host Thanksgiving. Nice, stress free dinner for us, I went to my father in law's house to drop him off a plate and we played darts for a few hours. Then back home, dishes done and I sat up playing Rise of Nations until 3am.

I imagine Christmas will be much the same

Yeah, I'm not a huge party beast either really. Mostly I just can't be bothered. Would have liked to have had my son and gf, but there you go. At least vaccines are on the horizon, and the boxes of chocolates won't disappear quite as quickly.

I don't mind it when they're actually there, it's just the added stress of getting ready for arrival and the cleaning up afterwards that I can do without.

Christmas itself is always just us though and that's never going to change.

Zip, except cooking, and maybe a glass or two of wine to help with the cooking. We're not even putting up the tree this year, but might dig out a small gold tree to put on the hall table.

Stayin home doing not much. Too close to having this thing sorted finally to risk too much now. Plenty of time to get together and stuff once all this is done with.

Agreed. The boys will be with us and possibly a work colleague who we see very day anyway. So no expansion of the bubble is expected. Then we just have to wait for the vaccine to be rolled out to those of us near the tail of the line.

Here too. Although MiddleChild did mention the other day that he's sure we only migrated so I didn't have to perform the Christmas Shuffle* ever again. He may have had a point. Now it's just the five of us and enough food to feed 500.

*Christmas Shuffle - We lived in York. My parents lived in Newcastle. Himself's mum lived in Folkestone. Kids' other grandparents lived in Warrington. MiddleChild's birthday on Christmas Eve - shuffled over to Warrington for the day. Christmas Day at home. Boxing Day shuffled up to Newcastle for the day. New Year's Eve shuffled down to Folkestone for a couple of days. Happy never to do it again (although obviously I miss actually seeing them all!!)

The Goo Goo Dolls are one of my favourite bands but I'm not sure I approve of this.

I mean, it's good...but why?
