Yeah, that 1990 semi final was a hard one for me. That West German team were my favourite of the tournament but I wanted England to do well, too.

But they didn't, because penalties ...

That's why I said 'mathematical' glimmer of hope

I have to believe England can win that match, though. Honestly, I think if we had the 1986/1990 teams, even in their 40s and 50s though they are, they'd have done better than this line up.

That being said, investing in the future and all that. It just won't be Woy at the helm in Euro '16 after this ...

I'll be as happy to see a Costa Rica upset as an Italian win today.

West Germany didn't win that penalty shoot out, though. Stuart Pearce and Christ Waddle lost it. Can't really hold that against Matthaus and co.

Yeah, when the Germans beat us they do it fair and square unlike other teams such as the Argentinians and Portuguese.

Yep. I would tend to agree with that. Whatever the final scoreline, England v Germany is always one I look forward to.

Obviously not, but losing 4-3 on penalties when two of one team's five were missed is a bit more cut and dry than a major international incident

Jack Warner has business interests in Costa Rica, don't worry, they'll be removed from the tournament and England will take their place, and go on to win the trophy.

Either that or Uruguay's dulce de leche is found to contain performance enhancing substances and they're disqualified.
