Rugby World Cup 2019

All off to an interesting start.
New Zealand battered by South Africa for 20 minutes and 5 minutes later NZ have the game safe.
France had a close shave against Argentina
England came through a tough encounter with Tonga despite some very generous refereeing towards the Pacific Islanders. Lineouts seem to be going the way of scrum feeds if he was anything to go by.
Ireland beat Scotland. Wales up tomorrow.

With apologies to my fellow celts, I'm not sure that Scotland even turned up. Best played a stonker for a 37-year old on his last trip overseas.
England made hard work of Tonga, not the 10+ tries expected - but nowhere near the mess France were in against Argentina.
Can't see Georgia posing much of a problem to Wales........

Who expected that?

The New Zealand commentary team we had here certainly didn't. Aside from the handling errors they thought we did well enough. The pitchside expert said it was humid (with the roof closed) and could have been the reason...that and the fact that England made very many more passes so were more likely to drop the ball more often.

NZ definitely scary though. I saw them a few weeks ago get slaughtered by a not very good Australia. What were they doing, lulling us all into a false sense of security?

I heard there were lots of complaints about it not being on main TV channels and that for the internet deal, a lot of people's internet wasn't good enough.

NZ were impressive. I saw them a few weeks ago get stuffed by a not very good Aussie team. South Africa pummelled them for 20 minutes and 5 minutes later NZ had the match sewn up after deciding it was probably a good idea for them to start playing.

True . We don't do fast here.
I just bought it so we will see come Saturday. So far had to rely on news snippets and bits of highlights.

My husband used a VPN whilst in Italy. I was super excited to watch the Rugby.

However, that USA vs England game.. Talk about embarrassment.

Shame about the red card but the right decision.

Opponents targeting Farrell it seems. He needs to get his sights adjusted. Can't afford those misses in matches to come. Nice to see Jack Nowell back

Re: Rugby World Cup 2019

Yup - most unlike Farrell.

One bit of good news is Japan beating Samoa. We in Bristol will now get our Samoans back in time for the start of the Premiership season.

Bristol Bears playing Exeter Chiefs on Saturday at 15:00 BST. It's on BT sport and possibly some non-UK channels.

It's a cup match - this is being treated as pre-season by some clubs including Bristol so we are fielding a weak side while Exeter seem to be playing their big guns so we can expect a bit of a stuffing - but who knows...

Might take a look for a stream but at the same time Swindon Vs Plymouth is on the telly.

At least I can start the day with Ireland-Samoa which ought to be entertaining enough.

It might be a dream, but if nothing else, it would be good to shave a little smugness off the kiwis.

Ohh well, hard luck Australia, your world cup is well and truly OVER, 40-16 thrashing by England.

Ireland beaten big time by the Kiwis as well. SO it's UK v All Blacks next Saturday.

And my bet (I don't bet) is that it'll be Wales v South Africa next Sunday.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2019

A major highlight of the England match was Australia's late try not being allowed. Not from any mean streak but the incredulity in Jerome Garces' voice in response to the TMO being "happy" with both (potentially forward) passes prior to the guy running clear.

Was the correct answer.

Ireland was disappointing . Certainly wasn't their game at all.

Husband stayed up late to watch the Wales match . From the score it seems it was a good close game.

France blew it big time. Idiotic forward seemed oblivious to the presence of cameras when he did this

But even with a man down they were holding out until they lost a 5m scrum in a way that can only be described as equivalent to football's own goal.

He knw he was going to be sent off, never even said a word of complaint to the ref, I was so deliberate, I suspect he is due a ban in France as well.

He got the result right, just not the scores, New Zealand never really in the match after that first try. I saw on SM that someone had already got a tattoo of the RWC showing New Zealand winning it in 2019, bet he feels a bit of a fool now.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2019

Great to finally win a WC match against NZ.

Shame about the two disallowed tries, especially the first.

Always a grey area for me, dummy runners, and seemed typical that so often NZ will have two or three in one go all effectively blocking the opposition from getting to the guy receiving the pass and that England, with only one doing it get penalised "because contact was made" with a New Zealander and that contact was actually because of a tackle on a player without the ball. There would potentially be no contact but for the NZ guy doing what you are not supposed to do,.
