Understanding the risk involved to a player, I could understand the teams not wanting their $150 million $$/Euro player to risk injury- afterall, these matches are not powder puff games like US Baseball/Football/Basketball Allstar games for example.

Bonuses for victories, and a huge one for winning the whole thing. S.S. went with $100,000 bonus per goal. There is no consistency. It varies from country to country. The rest, I have no clue.

2-If so, by who? By their national Football Association.

3-Is there a standard pay scale, or do Germans earn more than GHana players for example? Each Football Association sets their own contracts as to who gets what, including bonuses.

4- Do all players have clauses in their regular team contracts permitting them to play? I'm pretty sure it's a yes.

5- If a player is injured during a World Cup (or other National Team) match, is their team compensated...and if so by who? Yes, the club is compensated by the national Association through their insurance. This covers the player's loss of earnings for the length of time he's injured.

6- Does a team HAVE to allow players to play for National teams? Club teams cannot legitimately stop a player from playing for their national team, though the player can make themselves unavailable for certain reasons.

Understanding the risk involved to a player, I could understand the teams not wanting their $150 million $$/Euro player to risk injury- afterall, these matches are not powder puff games like US Baseball/Football/Basketball Allstar games for example.
There have been comparatively few major injuries in international matches in recent years to my knowledge, though this is surprising when you consider that these players have mostly just finished a hard-fought domestic league season and may be heading back into pre-season soon after the World Cup without much of a break.

So new question - what is your best and worst moment of the tournament so far (and if anyone picks Italy going out as their 'best' moment I'm gonna cry!)

Mine...best - Ghana stuffing the Yanks and going through to the quarters, worst - seeing Cannavaro crying as he walked off the pitch

Best Moment - Maradona thinking he's being asked if he's gay.

"I still prefer women. I am dating Veronica who is blond and 31-years-old."

You do not **** with Diego Maradona.

Worst Moment - England being buggered by Germany and in dire need of two goals, so Capello brings on Emile Heskey.

best moment - the goal by which Switzerland beat Spain: top quality slapstick stuff

worst moment - England v Algeria: far more painful to watch than the Germany game

Just for that, my two best moments were the ITALIANS GOING OUT, and the ITALIANS GOING OUT.

Ditto...nice to see the country with one of the best leagues and players...the WC perennial underdog if you will, advance. Is it possible to see Spain in the final? Only God (or the umps/arbitros/FIFA) knows .

I think the Yanks are better than many give them credit for. They made it to the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009, beating Spain 2-0 and lost 3-2 to Brazil. They led Brazil 2-0 at one point. They're coming along. When you consider that the sport is not anywhere as big in the U.S. as it is in the rest of the world, not a bad performance.

My very non-expert view of the US was that they seemed to attack well, but their ball control was terrible most times- passes going to their opponents, passes goint o where no one was, balls taken away too easily, opportunities missed. S. Korea and Germany seemed much more crisp/precise, players could advance and maintain the ball, passes always went to a well positioned teammate, and they didn't lose control of the ball as much as we did. Perhaps this is due to limited practice time together- longtime team mates instinctivly know where their mate is or is going to be, or where he is going to go. In fact, I'd love to see a World Cup team play a Real Madrid, Manchester or Inter Milan just to see if their talent tops the teamwork of the regular team.

The passing could have been more consistent for sure. Hopefully in four years time things will look up.
