WA Wins Bid for National Team

The Journey to the NRL Begins:
At the ARL Board Meeting yesterday (Tuesday 12th Dec) following months of negotiation with the WARL, a motion was passed to allow a WA team to participate in either the Jim Beam Cup or the QLD Wizard Cup in 2008 ongoing.

Today (13th Dec 2006) the Western Australian Rugby League officially announces its entry into the Jim Beam Cup from 2008.

The WARL Board has decided the best first step back towards our ultimate goal, a return to the NRL, is via the Jim Beam Cup in 2008 for a minimum 2 years with option of progressing into the Queensland Cup then the NRL.

The key focus is to build support, credibility and momentum to bid for a Perth based National Rugby League (NRL) team for 2011 to 2012.

Following is a summary of our upcoming campaign and events:

I just wish we could say the same about Cumbria .... rugby league really is making huge advances in Europe ... yet huge tracts of the heartlands are still devoid of top class teams ... just look at Merseyside

I dont know the full criteria, but i was reading on a website the other day that from 2009 places in S.L. will be awarded on a franchise basis. As was mooted around the time Super League came into being, perhaps the way forward for Cumbria is for Whitehaven,Workington,(not sure the distances here but Barrow as well?)to come together to form a new club.Im sure there will be lots of opposition from some fans but if they want a top level club, they wont get it on a stand alone basis.
The early money is on Toulouse to get a spot, not sure France can support 2 super league sides yet.
Sorry for going off topic about Perth!!

Would be good to actually have a national rugby league comp bring back Perth and Adelaide - not sure NRL would continue expansion of current format

At least South Sydney won't be the only whipping boys of the competition then.

I was under the opinion that the NRL was still trying to rationalise the comp. Tried extra teamsbefore and failed, there aren't enough quality players to go around with 20+ teams nowadays. Will give GC Titans (formerly known as GC Seagulls, GC Giants, GC Chargers) 3 years before they are defunct. They might as well bring back the Brisbane Crushers along with the rest.
