Default Lions to Roar!!!

Looking forward to todays Lions v Western force, and the whole series, should be a cracker!! Read today that at Australia's first training session, the Aussie coach, Robbie Deans asked his squad to adopt their usual positions. so they all lined up under the posts, Lions to win series 2-1

Good line, like it.

Of course it would be wrong to point out that the Lions scored more today than the Australian cricket team did yesterday

Some good indications for the Test team as well:

Halfpenny a certainty and probably Bowe and North too, I liked the O'Driscoll/Tuilagi combination. Heaslip, Croft looked good and I would add Tipuric for the back row? AWJ idiot! But then we have 4 or 5 better locks anyway, maybe Gray and O'Connell. Sexton and Farell to close to call, likewise at SH. Front row will be last 3 standing at this rate, hope Healey will be OK.

So after that whimper against the Brumbies, it looks like North will be fit for the 1st test.

My view on the side he should select:

Halfpenny
North
BOD
Manu if fit or JD if not (Roberts would have been there)
Zebo looks like our most creative back
Sexton
Phillips (SH our weaknest position by far if he is the best)
Cole
Young
Jones
O'Connell
Parling
Croft
Heaslip
Tipuric

but I suspect Gatland is likely to select:

Halfpenny
North
Davies
BOD
Cuthburt
Sexton
Phillips
Cole
Hibbard
Jones
AWJ
POC
Croft
Faletau
Warburton

OK so he went for:

British & Irish Lions starting XV: Leigh Halfpenny (Wales), Alex Cuthbert (Wales), Brian O'Driscoll (Ireland), Jonathan Davies (Wales), George North (Wales), Jonathan Sexton (Ireland), Mike Phillips (Wales); Alex Corbisiero (England), Tom Youngs (England), Adam Jones (Wales), Alun Wyn Jones (Wales), Paul O'Connell (Ireland), Tom Croft (England), Sam Warburton (Wales, capt), Jamie Heaslip (Ireland).

Not sure how Cuthbert gets in and Zebo not even on the bench. Tipuric unlucky to be left out but once Warburton named as Capt he was doomed despite playing so well.

Corbs a good call to offset a very poor scrummager (AWJ) behind him in the engine room.

I suspect Aussie's will look to exploit Cuthbert's defence and the speed/agility advantage they will have over our 2 slightly ponderous half backs.

Lions look set up to play brute force rugby as only BOD is a creative player in our backs.

Should be interesting to watch.

Well that fell in the category of rather be lucky than good - phew got away with it.

POC out for tour = bad news as will be replaced by Parling who lacks some of the grunt of POC albeit still having much more than AWJ.

Corbisiero doubtful also weakens the Lions scrum. Not a Vunipola fan!

Good news is that Bowe may be back to add something to the backline in terms of defence and creativity and maybe Roberts too (or Manu T if he does not make it) whilst Roberts is also a big bosher has much more variety than Davies (i.e. he can actually pass).

The main question for me is with Genia having shown up Phillips as far too slow will they go for one of the other SHs who are better equipped to contend with Genia or stick with the big beast?

Without some changes from the Lions it will probably finish 2-1 to Aussies especially missing POC and sticking with Phillips.

Finally it looks like Gatland has done the right thing, Phillips out, Bowe in for Cuthbert, Lydiate into the back row. He has picked Vunipola though which I am not sure is a good move.

Looks like a much better balance to the side with a proper scrum half and Bowe adding some creativity to the big boshers. I am much more hopeful now of us winning one of the remaing 2 tests although we will miss POC and Corbisiero in the scrum.

Feel the loss of Corbisiero and Oconnell, could make life difficult for the Lions, also having seen the replay Horwill lucky to be playing, The Lions are quite capable of stepipng up, think they will need to to win the second test

Yeah exactly, with Corbs and POC playing and Phillips and Cuthbert left out; I would be very confident of our set piece and 2 opportunities for the Aussies to exploit having been removed. Unfortunately we have lost our 2 of our best 3 best scrummagers (Jones being the 3rd) and whilst Parling has more grunt than AWJ he does not bring as much to the scrum party as POC and MV is well behind Corbs at scrum time. I remember all too well the first test 4 years ago with the scrum limitations of Vickery and AWJ being brutally exploited and worry that will happen on Saturday.

Gonna be too close to call methinks!

and it was - can't argue against the result, the better team won.

Time for some major surgery to the team methinks :

Both centres were rubbish (JD in particular for the try) and should be dropped if Roberts and Tuilagi are fit.

AWJ has to go as he weakens the scrum and is doing nothing in the loose, which is normally his strength. Therefore, Gray deserves a shot at partnering Parling.

Vunipola, why? If Corbs isn't fit then give Grant a go.

Halfpenny and North. top class as was Jones until he tired.

Lydiate added bulk and tackling but gave away a stupid penalty and created nothing. Tipuric in for Warburton as he looks hurt.

Halfpenny
Bowe
North
Roberts (or BOD if injured)
Tuilagi
Sexton
Youngs (or Murray, in fact anyone but Phillips)
Corbs, Youngs, Jones (Hibbard must be colourblind as he keeps throwing to the wrong colour shirt like Best)
Gray and Parling
Tipuric, Heaslip, Croft

Bench:
Maitland, Farrell, Best or Hibbard (but only use them for an injury), Grant, Cole, Lydiate, Evans, Murray

Got to end the pro-Welsh and anti-Scottish bias before it is to late but I suspect we will end up with 9 or 10 welsh playing and losing in the decider as th eAussies seem quite caapable of dealing with one dimensional big bosher rugby.

You were correct mate.

That's more offensive that Woodwards English bias years back.

6 changes. 10 Welsh in Lions team equals their record contingent of 1950. (Wales have lost their last 8 games v Australia, 4 times in 2012 alone).

we are doomed we are doomed
