Having watched most of this weekeds F1 I would suggest Torvill and Dean would be on pole if they had entered

Wonder what odds could be got on him taking out Verstappen at the first corner.

So 6th on the grid, and he still wins, world champion for the 7th Time, matching Schumacher,BUT he has won more races, so now, officially the best driver ever. How do they stop him doing it next year?

I would have said Fangio was the best (based on stats) but Lewis is the greatest of his generation.

Good day for Perez, he may not have a drive next year but he is making the best of this year and stamping on his team mate.

Lewis has now equalled Michael Schumacher for number of World Driver's Championship wins. And very likely to surpass Schumacher.

Lewis does not get enough credit, quite a few people dismiss his wins as being lucky to have the best car and lacking real competition.

BBC have done a good article about it.

It's like comparing Pele with Messi etc.

Lewis is the current and lacks the romance of reminiscing. When I'm older and there's a new kid winning all the time I'll probably end up saying Lewis was better because it was better back then (now).

They're all greats, he's just going to retire with the best numbers, probably.

Vettel said it well, something like...
We might shit it without seat belts,
But Fangio might shit it at modern speeds.

Saw Vettel at the start of the GP inching around corners, but still got to 170mph on a straight. Bollocks the size of watermelons on those guys doing that yesterday.

Probably safer to hope you where thrown free of the car anyway in the 50s. There was no consideration for crash safety so they had no self-sealing fuel bladders, impact structures or propper rollover protection. It was a very different time!

The reason I give it to Fangio is pole and winning % in races entered. People moan about having to watch Hamilton win every weekend but he has only won 35% of the races he has entered (qualifying first 36% of the time) while Fangio won 46% of raced entered (qualifying first 55% of the time.) Luckily most people didn't yet own a TV back then so didn't have to watch it. The thing that limited Fangios career was WW2, by the time of his last win in his final 1957 he was already 46 years old because he had this large gap in racing during the war. That said seasons where much shorter and drivers couldn't just be F1 specialists, as a factory driver you had duties in endurance and rally as well. There are a lot of times in racing when things are debatable, there are so many "what if's" or "could haves" but Fangio was just so far ahead of other drivers at that time (including the likes of Moss and Ascari.)

And to add to that: a modern F1 car has a zillion settings and parameters to adjust and be aware of , on the steering wheel.

When it comes to balls of gigantic propotions Isle of Man TT racers take the cake. To say those guys are mental would be a gross understatement.

All fair comments based on picking the only stat Hamilton isn't leading in.
