Default Copa America

Watched a bit of Venezuela against Peru and apart from a lot of fouling nothing of note.

Colombia vs Argentina was much better. First half mostly Colombia but their final ball and shooting was awful. Looked like it would continue second half but suddenly they did things right and stormed to a 2-0 win.

Hard to see how a team with Di Maria, Aguero and Messi can be so ineffective even with keeper Ospina's terrible decision making giving them opportunities.

Looking forward to Uruguay and Ecuador kicking lumps off each other Sunday.

Semi finals Tues and Weds.

Clash of the ex Giants, Argentina - Brazil
Then Chile - Peru.

VAR has been an absolute disaster. Most of the time you just see the ref holding his ear. The commentator is completely in the dark and has to guess what's being looked at. They are not getting the messages that we know they got in last year's world cup and champions league and there's usually no on screen caption either.

If you're lucky, you see the ref looking at the pitch-side monitor but we don't see the replays. He makes his decision and then you might see the incident.

It's appallingly done. I know there have been complaints about it from the women's world cup but you know what's going on even if you disagree.

The matches are on TSN in Canada...and so are the Gold Cup semis which should see a Mexico-USA final but both teams were less than convincing in their quarter final games so maybe Jamaica - Haiti.

Poor old Lionel "the referee is a cheat" Messi.
We wuz robbed.

BBC's live text showed 36 fouls by Argentina (18 from Brazil) but Brazil and the ref were the ones cheating.

Shock win for Peru over Chile, 3-0. Delightful going forward but only when you let them.

So now it's Peru-Brazil in the final, Brazil having beaten them 5-0 in the group stage.

Surely the BBC only count the fouls the ref punished not the actual fouls missed/ignored so if the ref was cheating there would be more fouls against Argentina. I couldn't care less though, Messi was a dirty cheat against Liverpool so he can't complain too much.

Or even that they weren't even fouls. But live TV and VAR would suggest something very untoward if something like that was happening disproportionately.

Jesus was targeted in particular which was surprising as he's not exactly a Messi or Hazard.

Seriously though, the below the line comments in the Guardian match reports from names suggesting South American origin are of a tin foil hat level.
