Laporta said Messi had agreed in principle first to a two-year deal with payments over five years then to a five-year deal – although the expectation was that he would probably play only two. Daily Express says ManU made an offer. |

Great test of 'love' for a club, being a bazillionaire and can only play for the club you 'love' if your sponsors keep you earning loads, not the club. |

It's bad for La Liga to lose him so they could also say the Pandemic is exceptional so normal rules don't apply to an exceptional event. They already have a sponsor deal lined up and Barca "can't accept it without guarantees" so just make a guarantee and problem solved. One other thing...isn't it funny how the salary breaking the rules only became an issue at the exact moment his contract ran out? :sneaky: |

Not really. La Ligas financial rules are 'in advance' rather than retroactive, so it really is only an issue at the beginning of the period.

Re: The 2021/22 Football Thread
**** knows but I'm not buying the tears.
Faxed them to leave last year. Cries his eyes out this year because he won't get hundreds of millions to stay at Barca. Play for a euro a week if you're that bothered. The club will exist without you and if you demand huge money, they probably won't exist for much longer. If you 'love' them, then leaving is the only option if you won't work for nothing. |
Re: The 2021/22 Football Thread
But with a supposedly lower salary rate from what would be now onwards, how does that break the rule now but not last season when it was more? https://britishexpats.com/forum/imag...s/confused.gif https://www.chaseyoursport.com/Footb...explained/2867 |

This is a good article on the topic
So this bit is key then..."La Liga had planned on bringing fans back to the stadiums but the plan did not go through. This resulted in no reduced debt for the clubs and increased financial problems." The league has essentially set a target which assumed income from ticket sales. With that unplanned for loss of income it doesn't seem fair to expect the same target to be met. |

The league has essentially set a target which assumed income from ticket sales. With that unplanned for loss of income it doesn't seem fair to expect the same target to be met. The main clubs, Barca and Real Madrid have overspent for decades and are now both in so much debt, it'll be eye-watering numbers needing to be saved / invested to get them out of it. Whilst over there I did the stadium tour at the Camp Nou and frankly, it's pretty terrible as far as a stadium goes for one of the biggest clubs in the world. |

I guess Chelsea's next manager might be buying Abraham back for stupid money in a few years time... After all, Utd did the same with Pogba, and now Chelsea appear to have re-signed Lukaku it seems. Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to just loan out players to Italian clubs?

Brentford, top of the league. Should have been a foul on the goalie for that second goal though.

Re: The 2021/22 Football Thread
Barry Glendenning had Brentford nailed on to beat Arsenal. Seems he was right.

I was actually quite impressed with Arsenal. Well, Tierney, Smith-Rowe and Saka. If they could add a couple of experienced players - without baggage - they could do well in the long run. What about a not so cheeky bid for Bernardo Silva? Guardiola said he wants to leave. |

What in the **** are Southampton doing? They've lost at least 3 of their first team squad from last season and none of them are at Liverpool now. Are they re-investing the money at least or just paying back the loan the owner gave them?

Bruno 3 goals and not one a penalty. Pogba 4 assists and a full 90 minutes where I didn't swear at Fred. Not a bad opening result.

We've got the new Armstrong who scored yesterday on a deal and signed a couple of defenders which was desperately needed. Reality is, we're just looking like a very, very, very top Championship side now, like Arsenal. |
