Positive start. Stockport Gazza being substituted didn't go down well with some. Phillips had a very good game. Very strong bench so I expect rotations or players being substituted to conserve energy and used wisely. So wait until Friday then it's the Auld Enemy meeting.

Croatia (who are supposed to the toughest team in the group) really did not put up much resistance. They really are nothing but a team of old men at this point. Still you can only beat what is put in front of you.

I worry we will now win the group, which will put the second place team of Germany, Portugal, France and Hungry in our path.

My concerns were valid in the sense that he offers pretty much nothing.
That being said, it allowed Phillips to get a bit further forward and what a superb performance the Yorkshire Pirlo put in. I can tolerate Rice being a passenger for 90 mins if it allows him to play with that sort of quality, confidence and ambition.

I did think the same thing myself. Rice was pretty quiet in that DM hole next to Phillips as all he did was fill that hole essentially. But as you said, maybe that's what allowed Southgate to give Phillips the freedom to roam and attack when he saw the opportunity. I still think Sterling and Kane didn't offer us much at all in that game. Sterling just had the easiest job of finishing Phillips great run and ball through! Everyone keeps talking about Kane's 'heroics' at the 2018 world cup but if I recall correctly most of his goals were peno's. I think if we added Grealish and Calvert-Lewin in place of Sterling and Kane, we would get some goals.

I am excited for the game vs. the Scots now! I would love to see Grealish get a run out. I would love to see:

Was that the best 'half way line' goal ever?

I can't profess to have seen every half way line goal in history, so I would be hesitant to proclaim it 'best ever' but it's absolutely the best example that I have seen. The bend needed on the ball, the way he was sprinting rather than just standing there and launching it, and also the way the Scottish goalkeeper ended up planted in the back of his own net trying to stop it, just made it great.

I think Goal of the Tournament might be wrapped up already.

If today's had the height of some of the others, the keeper might get back in time.
