Default IT help needed! Wifi password key length not allowed by new laptop

At my mother's and trying to set up the new laptop and it's looking like a bit of a white elephant as i can't connect it to the internet. When typing in her bt passkey the digits become highlighted and won't let me continue for the full length. Tried google and all i get is it could be something to do with WEP.

Have no idea so am welcome to all suggestions (of an appropriate manner).

Edited to add: it's for all text boxes!

does the passkey not get entered when you configure the router ?

the cd would probably do it automatically

the laptop could have a seperate program that controls the network connection... windows has its own and does not need the extra software

the other way to fix it would be to reconfigure the wifi with a new short password...

I can't reconfigure it as all text boxes won't let more than 9 characters be entered. This incudes the search box on the start menu etc

It's not a wifi prob it's a fundamental issue on the laptop. Any ideas how to solve? If nothing pops up i'll call HP in the morning.

if you open a notepad document can you type more than 9?

if you type OSK in the start menu - it will open the on screen keyboard, see if it will allow more than 9 using that

No worries

Never seen that kind of problem before, I hate not knowing what was causing something. If you find out let me know

cheers

Some of the newly evolved laptops have minimal ASCII value to keep off operating system compatible, that is why Wifi password key-length are being restricted.

Try and change the router to use WPA2. Your neighbours 6 year old could crack WEP and leach your bandwidth. Even worse was a case of a paedophile using a neighbours wifi link to download porn. The guy went through hell until the real culprit was found.
