Similar thing here. I keep everything on SAN, daily SAN to SAN backup and weekly to S3 for the important stuff. I also class photos as personal information these days, especially since the advent of more biometric 2FA coming in. I am not sure if face recognition works with photos yet. I have just started using Yubikeys for 2FA where I can.

Cool, you're one up on me on the backup front.

I did look at offsite backups, but the money being asked for here was unbelievably silly.

Not sure how much critical data you have, byt up to 5GB is free.

As part of the AWS Free Usage Tier, you can get started with Amazon S3 for free. Upon sign-up, new AWS customers receive 5 GB of Amazon S3 storage in the Standard Storage class, 20,000 Get Requests, 2,000 Put Requests, and 15 GB of data transfer out each month for one year.

Thank you for the pointer.

I am moving house very soon, so need to keep stuff 'as is' for the time being, but will definitely look at that when landed.

Storage Area Network, sometimes also called NAS.

Basically it's a big disk (or a group of them) connected to a local area network, accessible (or not) from all machines on that network.

Thanks: I've always known it by NAS.

SAN = Storage Area Network: Is an enterprise-class storage system which allows direct connection between servers and storage. Usually using fibre connections and fast disk drives which can run 20-30 times faster than a NAS. Cost anything from $5,000 upwards. Large systems could cost millions+

NAS = Network Attached Storage: Low-end storage which plugs into the network. Much slower than SAN. Can be bought for just a few hundred dollars.

Thanks for clarifying. I used to work with SAN - as a user - and so what I have at home is NAS.

Not quite as barmy as I thought.

Might as well use this thread.

Two days ago I noticed a prompt for Spring update 1903, from May. A quick google didn't reveal anyone having nasty shocks, so I decided to update my spare laptop. But first, there were a bunch of updates to 1809 before I was invited to update to 1903. It's been a while since I used it.

It took a while, even with ethernet connected, what with the laptop being old and loss of internet (and power) part way through.

Updating to 1903 was much quicker on my main laptop.

I have an all-in-one computer that I last used even longer ago - it's purpose became redundant some time ago. I reset it, hoping to sell but had no takers. Since it's actually better than my original laptop, after a rethink, I decided to keep it rather than give it away. So I reloaded W10 and then completed all the updates for 1809.

It did this far more quickly - wirelessly - than the old laptop. But having completed updating 1809, there was no invitation for 1903. I did the check for updates feature - as that's what I had to do on the old laptop before the notice about 1903 came up - but it still said all up to date.

Anyone know why no invitation to 1903 yet?

Just give it some time whilst hooked up. Update system is generally pretty erratic at best.

Just had a look at mine, the HP desktop that I took up from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro last week is at 1903, 18362.239

The others all came with Win 10 Home installed and are sitting at 1803, 17134.885

The MSI mini-cube is dedicated for TV etc, it's running 24/7

Just turned it back on, checked updates and it's doing it now.

I have my old laptop - I still like it, the 'new' one, a smallish (but good) refurb desktop dedicated to my bedroom TV for streaming and the all-in-one. The other three all have their own laptops and tablets. It all seems a bit overkill to me.
