kindle in japan??

I'm moving to Yokohama next March for 2 years and was considering getting a kindle to use so I won't need to buy to many books whilst I'm over there....I'm a bit of a book nerd and couldn't not read!! Does anyone know if it's possible to get one there and how good a range of books I would be able to download?

Amazon Japan says yes but it would seem as though they are imported directly from the US. You could buy one in the UK, US or elsewherre and take it with you though which would work fine.

I think it's a good idea to be honest since English language books are a bit few and far between in Japan, although Book Off! (best name for a book store ever) often has some good second hand bargains. If you buy brand new English books, especially major novels, then they are usually imported from the UK and cost a small fortune. They were selling English copies of the latest Dan Brown book in Narita on the day of release last year and it cost nearly £20 for an imported copy of the UK edition.

Thanks for the info:-) I'll maybe have a look at getting one from US before we go. I'm not going there till March but getting quite excited already!! I never would have believed four years ago that I would have relocated to Australia and then be moving to Japan for a while:thumbsup:

Oh sorry, when I saw WA in your location info I thought you meant Washington. :)

You should be able to get one in Oz then I think for less than the cost of a US import.

Hi, I live in Japan and have an Amazon Kindle. I bought it and had it shipped from Amazon in the United States. It works perfectly well. I go to the U.S. Amazon website to download books, wirelessly. You can also download, directly, through your Kindle. No problems. At the moment it's not possible to buy a Kindle in Japan. Although I believe a Japanese version will be available by the end of the year.

Get the white 2.0 kindle. I've used it all over Asia without any problems connecting unless you're in the boondocks.
