Also I love 12th-century castles
On boxing day we came back to the UK after a 10 night stay in Naples. Enjoyed every minute of it.

Another vote for Naples. We stay in Vomero, beautiful views of the city, the bay and Vesuvius. Easy to get the funicular down to the mayhem, but most of what we like to see and do is in and around Vomero - markets, friendly bars (that feed you for free if you're buying drinks), fantastic people watching, good restauarants and beautiful structures including the castle of St Elmo. The added advantage if you travel in summer is the late afternoon and evening breeze, most welcome when it's sweltering down on the flats.

I can only comment on ours and expat friends here, travelling 2 or 3 times a year for the last 10 years.Mainly no major delays and efficient service.Alitalia didn,t even inform us that our flight from LCY was cancelled one year.I think you only hear the bad stories about Ryanair.

Ryanair is always the target of cat-calling and it is not very amusing.

Ryanair were fine for us too when we lived in the UK - we used them about half a dozen times over three years and didn't have any major problems. I think the thing that's sometimes forgotten when using budget airlines is the need to check the fine print regarding delays, cancellations, compensation etc. These flights are cheap for a reason! Having said that, if any airline doesn't keep to its contracted terms then I'd complain loud and long as well.
