I think this is poor reporting. The “S1” is a universal product of the EU which we were obliged to accept like every other EU member state. However prior to the EU the UK had bi-lateral agreements with many of these countries, so it may just take a little time to put these back in place. They touch on the subject of previous agreements, but it would not be such a “story” if they were saying “perhaps nothing will change”.

The Guardian is rather a dreadful publication and fanatically biased towards the scaremongering side of things which isn't exactly constructive for any of us. However, a quick search found this..

although, not being resident in Italy I have no knowledge of how residency or lack of it affects the right to healthcare and medical treatment. Maybe someone else can elaborate...

The UK govt wasnt obliged to accept the S1 - it voted for it, as it makes perfect sense not to have your OAP citizens traipse across Europe to have surgery when they're already ill. The default position will be life saving surgery only and/or private health care/insurance, as it used to be.

My layman's view is that there are two categories who should be safe, as follows:
- Those working (and paying contributions) - provided there are no obstacles to continuing their work, I would imagine they will be able to continue within the SSN as before (not least because that is the situation of a citizen of any other 3rd country)
- Those who have been resident for more than 5 years and have both enrolled into the SSN and got a Certidficate of Permanent Residency - I can't imagine a scenario in which they would be affected.
Any other thoughts?

I think this what matters to many of us here.

There are many reciprocal health and other agreements in place that precede the Common Market by decades.

Never forget that the media are there for money (be it physical papers, clicks, viewing figures or whatever, they are SELLING thermselves). And no news or good news doesn't usually do the job for them-

So there are no "reciprocal health and other agreements in place", they've been replaced by the arrangements provided by EU integration. As it stands, there is nothing to replace those EU arrangements on March 29th. I'm sure other things can be put in place but it will take time and political will. For people working, I imagine at the very least you'd be eligible for a permesso di soggiorno. For anyone not working, the situtation is considerably cloudier and we're under 8 weeks away from it happening.
