Hi,

Nice to meet you all. I have just moved to Verona but have arrived here without towels or bedsheets. Could someone possibly let me know a good place to buy them from in the city centre? I am not looking to spend too much either!

Also, are there any shops to buy affordable men's clothing in the centre? I have had a look around but have noticed that most places want nearly 100E for a shirt!!

You could try going to one of the 3 nearby shopping malls by bus (if you don't have a car that is). One of them (Le Corti Venete) also has a free coach going there directly from the centre but check out their websites for directions. Certainly you'll find something cheaper than the high end designer fare found in the city centre (however we are talking about the usual chains when in comes to the shopping centre, i.e. Zara, H&M, etc.) -

There's not much in the town centre for sheets/towels. I bought some at Frette Saturday because they were on offer. Not cheap -€20 bath towels-, but good quality. Most people we know go to Erbisti in Borgo Venezia. We sometimes go to a small shop in Via Mameli, but you'll need Italian there or rather, Veronese.:lol: You could get the N°33 bus to La grande Mela. There's not much in there, but the furniture store next door has a good selection. The Corte Venete is better and the bus is free. Or the market Sat mornings around the stadium.

For shirts in the town centre either Camicissima in Piazza Bra -3 x €90. There is also a Camicissima in The Corte Venete. Or Oviesse in Via Roma- cheaper. And again, the market. Or use M&S/Next/Tesco on-line.:)

There is an English Happy Hour in Verona on Thursdays.

Thank you very much for the advice!! I will have a look this weekend.

Also, I need to apply for the Italian residency here...I am teaching English but I am not sure how to go about applying for it. I have a contract for an apartment and a contract with my employer. I know I have to go to Commue, but what exactly do I need to take with me? How long should it take? I need to open a bank account asap, but it seems I can't do this unless I am a Italian resident? I heard the post office may let me though, but again I am not sure. My Italian is very poor at the moment, which makes it a lot harder!!

What is this Happy Hour as well?!

Like 37100, I was going to suggest just buying stuff from M&S, Debenhams etc. as they deliver here.

As for your residency, take work contract and passport to the Ufficio Anagrafe in your local comune and apply for residency. They'll photocopy your documents and make you fill out a form. Some time after that a Comune policeman will come knocking on your door, just to make sure you are who you said you are and that you do actually live where you said you did. Some banks will let you open a non-resident account. Don't know about the post office.

Hi Roger, sorry a bit late but welcome!

In the short space of time I have stayed here I have managed to track down all the main shopping centres and main shopping areas!

like the others have said your best bet would be to visit one of the main shopping centres, they all house huge supermarkets where you could probably find some reasonable priced towels etc. (the one at La Grande Mela is more basic but there is a shop there that has towels and linen)some of the supermarkets also have clothes sections, not brilliant though. Your best bet would be to order from the UK, check out Next as they are delivering free to Italy, for shirts.

I'm off to Ikea today, it's in Brescia so probably not that handy without transport, but for household stuff most definitely the cheapest.

The town hall should give you a receipt for you residency request and that, in theory, should be enough to open a bank account. If not, the on-line banks now have offices in town. Che Banca and Conto Arancio have booths at Le Corte Venete too.

Thursday morning, except in mid-winter, there is a farmer's market in the Arsenale courtyard. It's a good for friut and veg plus meat, poultry etc.

Next to Fnac, Malcesine.:) If you go down Vicolo Leoni -facing Frette- there is a English 2nd hand china shop on the right. :eek:

Thanks for all of the advice so far!! I am afraid I have another question...I have a job here but need to apply for the residency. I have managed to get an appointment and need to take my passport and a completed form on the day of the appointment. Where do I go to get this form? I am not sure which street the office will be in, a friend of mine arranged it all for me, but I still need to collect the form first. Does anyone know where I would need to go?

You need to go to the anagrafe in Via Adigetto. Passport and work contract. You can pick the form up from there or any anagrafe. Or print it off. http://portale.comune.verona.it/medi...allegato_1.pdf

Hello again,

I have received an electricity and gas bill...I was wondering if it was possible to pay the bill at the post office? I am still waiting for my residency appointment so have not opened an Italian bank account yet, so I cannot set up a direct debit.

Yes you can pay both at the Post Office, there is a small charge, something between 1 and 2 Euro per transaction however. Depending on the provider, you can also pay at a tobacconist.
