Suggestion....

The Spanish Forum has something called Siesta Time where there is no fixed topic and you can just lark around within what seem to be fairly flexible boundaries. Is it possible to have something like this on here and would anyone be interested? I suppose the first question is for the mods and the second for everyone else. I only ask 'cos some of our threads do go all over and I always feel guilty if I go off topic even if the OP joins in too! But I am easily distracted so I would find it quite a useful place to go!!

I'm up for it - if I'm not having a siesta ...................

TestaRossa Apr 27th 2008 9:29 pm

Re: Suggestion....

Doesn't that depend on the Sangella being used first though?!

Lorna at Vicenza Apr 27th 2008 9:39 pm

Re: Suggestion....

ha ha (nobody who hasn't followed this on other thread will get this) but if ever i get the chance to have an afternoon siesta it's child free - and OH free - but occasionally with a rabbit - (back to sex and the city) - is that too lude ???

TestaRossa Apr 28th 2008 6:24 am

Re: Suggestion....

Sorry, I'd gone to bed by the time this came in! Unfortunately I share my bed with a 4 year old when OH is away - which is most of the time, so chance for playing with furry friends would be a fine thing! And afternoons seem to be spent doing chores and picking up said 4 year old from school! Have fun for me !

Re: Suggestion....

Excellent idea! (not the rabbit - I've only been married a few weeks ;) ) but the thread! All for it :)

Lorna at Vicenza Apr 28th 2008 7:29 am

Re: Suggestion....

right - as a general kind of non-specific thread here's my little annoyance of the day ..........
as a Brit do you prefer organise - realise - apologise etc. or - organize - realize - apologize ?

I have recently noticed that many British authors have started to use what I was always taught was the American spelling of these words - and for some reason it annoys me !!!

sands Apr 28th 2008 7:34 am

Re: Suggestion....

Myself, I would always stick with the English usage of s in lieu of z. Spending time in the States and only getting annoyed by the z, I can't understand why they do it!!

Re: Suggestion....

excellent idea, the only problem is i can't keep up! I've only been away for the weekend and have just spent an hour reading all the updates on various posts. - would it be possible to make this site look a bit more like a work document? then I wouldn't have to keep hiding it from the people in the office!
What an interesting weekend, one couple who wouldn't let their 13 yr old daughter wet her feet in the sea b'cos she had just taken an antibiotic - is it written on the info sheets that there's a risk of heart failure or something?
The other with a small dog who took a sunbed to the beach for the dog!!
What a load of nutters!!
Great week-end mind, the annual kite festival at Cervia. If anyone fancies coming next year I'm up for it, a very laid back experience and a breath of fresh air with respect to the aseptic and artificial environments I'm usually surrounded by.

A quick question, is it normal to have a tea break in the UK at 5pm? Everyone here keeps going on about the tea-at-five thing... maybe I'm missing something but I can only remember running for the door to go home at 5pm...

Lorna at Vicenza Apr 28th 2008 8:39 am

Re: Suggestion....

tea- break at 5pm - no not normal. It's one of those stereotypes that people have of us - like people still getting on the tube with a brolly in one hand and a newspaper in the other.
A long long time ago afternoon tea was a common practice in gentile circles - because the gentry had dinner or supper so late.
Nowadays 5 o'clock seems to be PINT TIME for most people !

Re: Suggestion....

I'd kill for a pint and a packet of prawn cocktail crisps in a nice beer garden!!

Lorna at Vicenza Apr 28th 2008 9:02 am

Re: Suggestion....

never liked beer so for me it would have to be a pint of cold cider !!!

sands Apr 28th 2008 9:05 am

Re: Suggestion....

swop your prawn cocktail crisps for some salt and vinegar :)

kathrynverona Apr 28th 2008 9:07 am

Re: Suggestion....

or worcester sauce.........

or those disgustingly smelly scampi and lemon fry things........ delicious!

Lorna at Vicenza Apr 28th 2008 9:09 am

Re: Suggestion....

beefy barbeque flavour - does anybody remeber the "hedgehog flavoured crips" ?

Was that just a big hoax or was it a real flavour for a while (yes i know they wouldn't have been real hedgehogs) - maybe it's just something I dreamt one night.

sands Apr 28th 2008 9:12 am

Re: Suggestion....

or some real pork scratchings!!! Drool drool. It's funny how so many threads end up in food talk!

kathrynverona Apr 28th 2008 9:18 am

Re: Suggestion....

The character DCI Hunt was eating a sherbert fountain in one of the episodes of Life on Mars - what memories that brought back!

kathrynverona Apr 28th 2008 9:36 am

Re: Suggestion....

oh yes!!

a 10p bag please! you could even get them for 1/2 p....

those were the days, you got 10p from the tooth fairy and then went down to the corner shop to buy sweets so the rest of your teeth could fall out!

I love sweeties and biscuits........something they don't seem to be that bothered about over here....and big sloppy oozing cakes like chocolate fudge cakes, jam roly poly, bread and butter pudding......

mmmmmmmmmm, orgasmic foody thoughts being spread across the net!!!

Lorna at Vicenza Apr 28th 2008 9:43 am

Re: Suggestion....

enough enough - I'm starving and don't know what to get for lunch. It won't be one of those dry salami and cheese sandwiches or whatever - why does nobody use margerine or mayonnaise. Some of those dry sandwiches are so hard to eat.

Lorna at Vicenza Apr 28th 2008 9:45 am

Re: Suggestion....

DEATH BY CHOCOLATE !!!!!

kathrynverona Apr 28th 2008 9:47 am

Re: Suggestion....

very true, they don't do sauces on any level, mayo, ketchup, tartare, horseradish, barbeque, yummy chilli/garlic dips, gravy..

no wonder they all have a hard time pooing, everyone I know seems to have problems with piles.......they should try a nice hot curry once a week, that should clean the tubes!

sands Apr 28th 2008 9:48 am

Re: Suggestion....

what a way to go! A big fat fruit and nut Cadbury's bar of course :D

Re: Suggestion....

I go off to pay my bills at the PO and come back to three pages to wade through - glad you like the idea! Can it be made a sticky or a special page like on the Spanish Forum - what would we call it instead of Siesta time though? Apperativo Time?! Some things are good in Italy - bring out the cocktails! I've found a place here in Florence does really boozy Long Island Tea and has happy hours! Mmm!

Florence has it's own version of Pork Scratchings, I think it is called Lardo (like lardons I think!) I had them at New Year, a friend had made them, they were really good!

Didn't the hedgehog crisps help the hedgehog rescue place or something? If anyone ever gets back to Uckfield in Sussex a shop opened there just selling all the junky and old sweets. Suddenly they weren't a penny anymore though. Cost me nearly a tenner to take my kids there! I can get a few things like humbugs and pear drops in some of the sweet shops here. Have you had a chocolate salami though?! And yes, it is a sweet, not something else. Like truffle with whole hazelnuts in it!

Oh, I use "s" in organise etc...

Here in Genova there is a butchers called CENTANARO that does only pork. They use their own pigs so control the product all the way through. Needless to say the meat is excellent. Tastes like meat used to when I was a kid.
Anyway they do pork scratchings. They call them ciccoli.

The last time I was in London in December there was a sweet shop that had all the sweets like drumsticks, flying saucers, refreshers etc. It was off oxford street on the left coming from marble arch. Its called Mrs Kibble's Olde Sweet Shoppe on 4 St Christopher's Place. Unfortunately they didn't have a web site to order from.

Re: Suggestion....

here's my other grievance of the day
I'm turning into a cynical bossy old woman - better say something nice tomorrow ....
Has anybody else noticed a new italian trend in recent years ........
Italian parents giving their 100% Italian kids English names and then spelling them and pronouncing them all wrong.
My teeth grind everytime I hear the woman across the road calling her son Keh- vveeeen
In my son's class there is a Sharon - pronounced Sharr-ronne.
There's even a Gienifer (Jennifer)
and if you're going to give your child the name David - but then pronounce it Dah-vid - why not just call the kid Davide ???

Well my happy hour starts now so give me an hour and I might have something nice to contribute .....

Re: Suggestion....

Well, I've had my answer to making this a subforum or sticky. I'll start a new thread called "Happy Hour", so look out for it! JDR will make it a sticky for us and if it gets really busy he will see if Admin will set it up as a permanent sub-forum.

So over to Happy Hour!

I know that this thread has been usurped by Happy Hour, but I thought that this link may be of interest to some

What time is Happy Hour by the way?

Any time you want, bit like English pubs used to be before they tightened up on them!
