Submitting my first Italian tax return - any advice?
Hi, having become tax-resident in Italy last year, I now have to file my first tax return for the tax year of 2018 and I would like to know what others do.
Do you complete and file your own tax return, either online or another way, or do you have an Italian accountant/commercialista do it for you?
If the latter, how much are you charged by your Italian accountant/commercialista for doing so?
(In my case the data needed must be pretty basic; a UK state pension and a private UK pension.)

In my opinion it is too complicated to do it yourself or even if it is possible at all. If you get a query from the AdE you would probably need to employ an accountant just to understand the question. In my first tax year an Italian accountant did my return and his mistakes produced a threatening letter from Equitalia 3 years later.
I declare a few UK savings on my tax return and the accountant charges around Euro300.

Do you have to do a tax return if you’re employed by a company full time and it’s your only source of income?

You dont seem to earn in Italy, so you could conceivably do it yourself, the new simplfied forms are much easier that the old ones. Its only January though! You've got ages yet.

A lot of Italians use the CAF to make the tax return. They understand the rules and you are therefore less likely to get fined.
I would start preparing all your tax information now. Tax returns have to be submitted 28 June. Your accountant will want the information in May so you have 3 months to decide what to do.

You can do it yourself online, but for peace of mind we go to the CAAF who do it for €50.

I had an expensive experience with the CAAF. I gave them my tax details in May and they said no problem but 8 weeks later they called me in and told me they couldn't do it. Then it was impossible to find an accountant because they were all on holiday. The CAAF in the north of course are probably more reliable.

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions. As 2018's will be my first submission I shall have a professional do it and see what the result is before deciding if I could do it myself in future years. Modicasa's suggestion that the form is simplified makes me wonder how bad it was! (I assume it's form 730?)
Although the submission is not for some months, at this stage I just wanted to have confirmation that my back-of-an-envelope calculation of what I need to set aside is approximately right.
Thanks.
