Sending passport back to UK - is raccomandata enough?
Hi there,
My passport is due to run out shortly and because of a recent short trip I took, I couldn't renew it before. I really need to send it very soon, so I would appreciate some advice.
I have used the renew from abroad service online from gov.uk and I just need to send it to the UK now. I looked into a courier (GLS) and was quoted €76. They then recommended DHL or UPS. I have heard bad reviews of UPS here. I also tried to send by insured mail from the Poste Italiane, but they don't send to the UK.
Does anyone have experience of sending their passport from Italy to the UK? How did you do it?
Does raccomandata have tracking and signing options? How secure is it? I have used it before for less important things, but I don't know if it is secure enough for this.
Has anyone used a courier for a decent price? I already had to pay for the courier fee for the UK to send the passport back to me, so I don't want to pay a crazy amount.
Thanks

Re: Sending passport back to UK - is raccomandata enough?
I renewed my passport several years ago and as far as I can recall I sent it raccomandata. It obviously arrived OK and my replacement came, by courier in very good time. It’s not really a tracking and signature on receipt service between Italy and UK though. It’s tracked until it leaves Italy and then - nothing. I just hoped that raccomandata might mean it got more careful treatment.
You could also try Spedizioni economiche con corriere espresso Italia e internazionale which functions as a broker for the main courier services. The rates are good, much better than going direct. We always pick UPS becuause we have found their service good. You can either have the item picked up at your house or take it to a selected drop-off point.

I would have thought Raccomandata Internazionale would do the job. I have used Postapriority Internazionale to send important letters to the UK a few times recently and they arrive amazingly quickly. The only thing is the tracking to the Italian border never works, always coming back with no data available.

I sent mine via DHL 2 years ago. I asked a friend with an account to sent it because it's cheaper. It went overnight for less than €20. It was returned via UPS.

I sent everything by international raccomandata con ricevuta di ritorno. The new passport came back to me in Italy before the Italian ricevuta di ritorno did.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Sent it by raccomandata with bated breath, but it has now arrived in the UK (4 days later). Quite impressed. Now hoping that the UK side will be as good.
Thanks, Ruby2 for the link. Might come in useful in the future.
