Seeking local knowledge near Bologna

Can anyone provide some information on living in the Camugnano area, about half-way between Bologna and Florence?
It seems very lovely terrain-wise, but is it de-populated? What are services like? Is English understood fairly readily? I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone familiar with the area.
