Right-hand drive estate car - Sicily
Early/mid June 2019 will be driving from UK to our new home on Sicily (Noto) in a 67-reg right-hand drive VW estate, eventually changing to left-hand drive 'local' car. In terms of disposal, bar driving back to UK and then flying back to Sicily, anyone have ideas on sale of VW? Many thanks.

Unless you take it to Malta, it'll have no takers. If you are moving to Sicily and taking residence then you will only have 60 days to sort out the car problem under hte new Salvini directive

Drive it back home. I have had non Italian registered cars here in Sicily for 3 years but regularly drive back up to have MOT etc.. Italian car insurance is expensive and unsatisfactory. Around where I live there are many Swiss registered cars.

A car of that age manufactured in Germany almost certainly has the potential to be convert to LHD.
How easy it would be to get the parts and whether the conversion would be cost-prohibitive are entirely other questions. I suspect a lot would depend on whether you are able to the work yourself, but the fact that the engine isn't in the way of the steering mechanism should make the RHD -> LHD switch relatively easy.

The new laws require that within 60 days of taking residence a car on non Italian plates is converted to Italian plates and immatricolata. Failure to do so (and if the cops stop you) will get you a 712 euro fine, and if it isnt done within a further 180 days will get your car confiscated.

Thanks for the responses and realised that I may have inadvertently misled people as to the age of the car. It's December 2017, hence the '67' number plate.

I would definitely sell it in the UK - a quick search on google.it will give an idea of "guida a destra" car prices. Converting it to italian plates to sell it will cost around 1000 euro excluding any modifications needed.

Judging from the comments, looks like returning it to the UK and flying back may well be best option.
However, we are likely to be moving into our new house near Noto around mid-June and if anyone was thinking of returning to the UK and would like to buy a UK 2017 registered VW Golf estate car, then I'm your man! Could also be interested in trading in for a not-too-old Italian registered car.

Modicasa's idea of selling it in Malta might be worth examining. You have at least 5 months to work something out if you wait 90days before becoming resident.
