Hi Everyone,

My family and i are looking to move to the Abruzzo region of italy in the near future. I am looking for some advise on medical cost. Our daughter is fed via a Gastrostomy and I wanted to know how i found out how much her milk would cost within the Italian healthcare system. Is there anyone on here in the same situation? Or that could point me in the right direction?

Hi Rae.

I'm sorry that you haven't received any answers, but this is probably due to the fact that there just isn't a simple answer.

Are you Italian citizens? If you are then everything might be free....or not. Chronic illnesses are usually exempt from charges, but it will depend on your child's diagnosis. It also depends you childs prescription. Some are free, some will incur a charge and some will only be available privately. Some free treatments are only available through a hospital. The level of care will also depend on the region in which you settle. To qualify for free treatment your child will need to be diagnosed by an Italian specialist.

If you are not Italian citizens, unless you are in work, you will need private healthcare. This can be through a contribution to the NHS if Abruzzo allows you do so - not all regions do. Someone from Abruzzo will have to answer that question. If they don't, you will need to find you own healthcare.

The best thing to do I think, is to look for an Italian support group. They might be able to give you more detailed and accurate information.

I’ve tried to find out if you can pay into the health care system here in Abruzzo, but nothing concrete found, it does look like you can though. If the young lady is on UK benefit, it may well be exportable and qualify her for a form S1 which would give her cover here in Italy without paying into their system.
