Default Puppies

Hi, we're looking for a good home for one or two of three puppies abandoned at our house (Ostuni, Italy). All female, they were in a sorry state, but thanks to the good work of vet Gianfranco in Cisternino are healthy now. They are also now used to children (and cats)! Please contact me if you can take one or know anybody interested. Best wishes, Paul

Paul, be careful when saying that these animals are used to children. Having been abandoned we don't know if they have been mistreated by people, they probably have.
News are full of cases when dogs snap at children just out of the blue and bad things can happen. What breed are these dogs? It can take months to establish whether an ex stray dog can be with children.

The problem you also may have is that if people know you take dogs next year you'll have the same people abandoning other dogs at your property.

Have you tried ringing the authorities?

The canile down here are full to bursting, and then some. Abandoned dogs is a major problem here. I wish you luck Paul, the volunteers here around San Vito are swamped, having to care for some dogs on the roadside, as there is just nowhere else to put them.

The puppies arrived a few weeks ago. They have a sweet nature and have spent a couple of hours at least per day with my children, so they are used to being handled. They are also being trained by the cats to show a bit of respect!
We would like to find a good home, ie, no cages or chains.

Unfortunately as MargaretM said the situation down here is dire, it will be even more so by the middle of next month, when many will go back to their town houses and leave behind the puppies they got for their kids to play with during the summer holidays.

In Ostuni the volunteers are ENPA Ostuni ENPA Ostuni

Yep, one of our dogs is one of those puppies - rescued from an almond grove 7 years ago. As well as our own (4) dogs, we are looking after 3 for the volunteers, and have been for 12 months now. They are lovely dogs, and really deserve more than we can give them, but for now they are getting plenty of food, a safe place to stay, and as many cuddles as we can. Unfortunately we have rental apartments here and so cannot give them the free reign of the place they deserve.

That's so sad . I'll never get how people can treat pets like disposable tissues. What does it teach the children.

Sadly the attitude towards animals down here and generally in the south of Italy is one of the negative aspects of living here.
