Talking Private or public dental treatment

My private Dentist wants to make a root canal therapy that is quite expensive

I wondered if anyone has tried public dental treatment in Italy?

The tooth isnt hurting so I have time to think about it.

Are you saying to travel to Croatia for treatment?

public dentists??? Never. Get quotes, go to Croata, Hungary or Malta, or get it done in Italy but shop around.

I also had Hungary recommended to me for dental tourism

Croatia is only a 4hr drive from here and accommodation is cheap over there.

I definitely would go for a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th ) opinion before believing the italian private dentist. Unfortunately they are well known for advocating unecessary treatment and they seem to have dollar signs in their eyes when they find out we are British. Alot of people I know here in Piemonte go over the border into France - either Briancon or further along.
Our private dentist started muttering about a brace for our teenage son - so I went to a new dental clinic and they said it absolutely is not necessary - hence we changed dentist

If ever I were to have a need for dental treatment I'd pop over the border to France – (either to Briançon or to St. Jean du Maurienne).

Looking at the replies so far, Italian dentists don't get terribly good reviews at all!

Yes not very positive for Italian dentists private or public.

Living in Umbria we are not very close to neighbouring countries.

I am a just bit worried if I had work done outside Italy and things didnt go smoothly. Not so convenient to get to Rome and off to Budapest or elsewhere.

My dentist is OK. He's also my GP too. Prices are quite reasonable and I get a discount if I pay in cash without receipt. Prices are per treatment, not per visit.

Although I have no experience of public dentists in Italy, can they be as bad as the NHS dentists in the UK?

Our dentist is Italian, he's very good but he is not cheap ! Our previous dentist was even more expensive and pretty hopeless . I didn't think there were any public dentists in this country ? I 've heard of people going to Croatia for treatment , there are hotels that offer packages that include this and its not really that far , probably not an option for a filling but it could be worth it for root canal work .

If you do not mind me asking, what has the dentist quoted?
I just had a root canal treatment and the costs were:
devitalizzazione 3 canali=250
He is also going to charge me 750 for a porcelain crown.

We used to live in Trieste and most people went to the ex-yugoslavia for dental work with varying degrees of success. This meant that dentists in Trieste were cheaper so we opted to use on of them. When OH saw the very low (compared to Vr) price of DS's mobile brace, he went back to ask if it was an installment!

We have a wonderful, but not cheap dentist. I'm sticking with him until he retires, but I've noticed a lot of low cost groups popping up around here like this one: http://www.dentadent.it/

There is also a dental plan from Genialloyd. They have a pricelist on the website for the various dental work using the plan.
