Re: More souls LOST ! ITALY's fault
it isnt the quality of the building it is the quality of the education received in them
when my daughter went to school almost 30 years ago the long long awaited new school, many years in planning, was opened. But they had more heads to teach than they had seats in the classrooms so it opened with 2 new portakabins.
leave it to planners - remember they always underestimate, never over.
in exactly the same way as schools that had playing fields taken away from them as Education didn't want the responsibility of Dual Use facilities, to enable rabbit hutches (sorry houses) to be built now regret the move a decade or so on as they have no room to build more permanant classrooms nor space for portakabins either.

Just heard on the news, boat carring 200 migrants sunk 70 nautical miles of Malta. Dozens of people dead.

And again these will not be the last unfortunately. It needs a massive and brutal in country (Somalia etc) advertising campaign to dissaude would be immigrants. It is useless to patrol coasts etc unless you want to facilitate picking them up, "Immigrant shopping". CH, A, SL, return them to Italy.
France puts them in camps. I have read today that 10 arrived last week in Cartagena (E) by boat and were arrested for illegal immigration a further 30+ were picked up in Almeria this week and were imprisoned pending repatriation.
In Ceuta, one of the Spanish enclaves, people who attempt to enter illegally are arrested and if they try and cross the barbed wire etc they may be shot at.

What an astonishing amount of ignorance is being shown by the rancid views expressed by people on this thread! I suggest they learn something about the situation before opening their mouths and showing themselves to be eye wateringly stupid. And if they found themselves on a beach in Sicily with people drowning and screaming for help, would they leave them to die?

Bravo it is disgusting to see the narrow minded attitude and lack of even the minimum of human compassion of some people.

What fluffy universe do you live in? These people are 'choosing' to face their death and perishing because-horrifically-it's the best option they have and most of them paying all they have to do so.
And so what if they turn up with a mobile phone. I just can't find the right words to use. I truly hope you never find yourself in their situation.
The Red Cross have a Syria Crisis Appeal should anyone want to help:

Good for you !
Try and arrange a regular ferry services to pick them up without documents and with a free ticket to a better life. I'm sure we could help 10,000 a day to fulfill their dreams of a solid job, quality accomodation and a leisurely life in Europe. All it needs is some good PR and advertising throughout the ME and N.Africa showing the streets paved with gold and the prisons so full that you cannot be sent there..

Hear hear. To make an understatement- this is a thoroughly unpleasant thread. The smiling/winking 'smilies' 'emojos' whatever they are called, a repugnant coat of icing.

But the photo's released, especially those at Calais/Sangatte, are young 20-30yo men who if they had a single ounce of decency would be there fighting for their country. Or are they too frightened ??
These are economic migrants, they have paid large sums to get onto a boat, they have no passports/ID which makes them Displaced Persons. They want to get to the UK because of its world renown for being "a soft touch".
The accepted principle of Asylum is that it is claimed at the first safe place. That doesn't mean they can take a trip across Europe by train, funded by the Italian Govt, and then demand someone takes them to England.
The things going on in Syria, and a couple of other countries, are horrific. No good will come of it. The divisions will still be there once the fighting has stopped. We know that from our experience in Northern Ireland.
But you can't keep finding homes/schools/jobs for Immigrants when the locals of any country are desperate for the same facilities themselves - and they have invested generations of living in that country.
This is another recipe for disaster, where desperate people will find they are not wanted for all the wrong (or perhaps the right) reasons - the main one being that they are getting something the locals can't get. And we all know of the racism that exists in places like the UK because of huge, unexpected, influxes of people.

A bit of perspective, history and an avoidance of the Rothermere press would help on this thread.
To say that Somali's are economic migrants is to ignore that last 80 years of history of that country - brutalised under Mussolini, destroyed by the British and then subjected to a genocide by warring factions. To say that all the 20/30 year olds at Sangatte havent an ounce of common decency is to misunderstand totally the situation in such countries. Most of the African, and if we are honest, Middle Eastern conflicts are promulgated and financed by the west and by big business who want what those countries have to offer - the people are the casualties of politics and greed.
It is wholly arrogant to assume that all these people want to come to Britain, as the Mail repeatedly tells us. The vast majority want to go to France and Germany, and return to their home countries when it is safe to do so. Fleeing civil war, genocide, chemical weapons, murderers and rapists does not seem to me to be economic migration. Nor does giving your life savings aswell as indebting your family that remains to the boat traffickers make much sense unless you are truly desperate.
The idea that these people are just on some sort of gravy train for a bit of free health care and some housing benefit is utterly repellent.
