Lajatico where to stay
 

We are planning on going to see Andrea Bocellii next year at the Teatro del Silenzio. Has anyone else been? The theatre is in Latajico so not sure where we should base ourselves. Does anyone know what Latajico is like for accommodation? Is there anywhere else nearby to visit?

Depends what you mean by 'nearby'.

Assuming you have a car.

30 mins - Volterra is well worth a visit. Amazingly, beautiful atmospheric place with at least 3000 years of history.
1 hour - Siena. Obviously one of the great Italian cities with fantastic museums and very special piazzas
2 hours - Val D'Orcia - extremely beautiful UNESCO world heritage countryside (as seen in the movie 'Gladiator' )

If I were you I would love to be based in Latajico, a little before, during and for a little while after the concert. The Concert is special as Latajico is a smallish authentic Tuscan town the birth place of Andre Bocelli, and the annual concert is a very big deal for the town. It may be difficult to find accommoation in the town as it may all be sold out, but it is worth contacting all you can find on the internet - Air BnB etc.

Thanks for the replies and info. We think we may stay in Vicopisano now as we have found some accommodation and stay for a few days before and after the concert. We have done Florence a few times and been to Siena but will visit some other places and will try your suggestions. Any advice on whether Lucca and Livorno are worth a visit?

The walls of Lucca are the equivalent of a star wars defence system. After the invention of the cannon conventional city walls no longer offered effective defence. The answer was to build two masonary/brick walls with earth in between to absorb the energy of an impact by a cannon ball and this is what you see in Lucca. I forget the exact width but it must be at least thirty feet and the locals use the road on the top to walk cycle and just relax. The Piazza dell'anfiteatro is one of my favourite places in Italy. It is elliptical in shape because it was built on the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, at least two of the entrances are by means of tunnels with the original Roman construction in evidence, it's fabulous. Plenty of good shops and restaurants as well, at least there were pre Covid.
