Kitten and litter tray

Oh please help somone!!
We have been adopted by a stray cat about 3 - 4 months old.
We put a litter tray down and in the night when she is asleep in the kitchen,we leave it by the door for her.
She wees in it but for anything "bigger" she goes on the kitchen floor,or runs outside as soon as we open the door in the morning.
PLEASE how do you train a young cat to use the tray?

Re: Kitten and litter tray

Thanks for that Lorna,it was very helpful.
We have had the little stray (Called Piccola) for 3 weeks now and love her.She is very affectionate and curls up on our laps.
We took her to the vet for a check up,just to be sure of worms, fleas etc.
However to our horror she has been diagnosed with a hole in her diaphragm, which has pushed her intestines into the lung cavity.
She is too young and thin to operate on yet,so the vet wants us to keep her eating lots, get stronger and then try to operate.
Obviously she may not last a few months, but we are going to do all we can to help her.
So the answer is YES we are keeping her,but we dont lnow if she will make it through the operation yet.
