Hummus?

Hi All,

Okay....I have been a couple of time to my new house in the Siracusa Region of Sicily....and my wife and i have been to several markets in the area...but we cannot find any place that sells hummus....
I know this may be a bit silly to ask....but surely it must be sold somewhere in Sicily...if not then i guess i am going to learning to make it....

Anyone know where we can find hummus in the Siracusa Sicily region? :fingerscrossed:

Also, if any of you know of any Arabic lamp or Asian furniture stores in sicily that would greatly helpful as well....my wife has a master plan for furnishing and decorating in Arabic, Asian and African styles in various rooms....

Thanks for your advise...

I've never seen it either (Sardinia) in any freshish form. I think I've seen it in jars but the real chemical muck. It's easy to make as long as you can source Tahini which surprise, surprise, I've never seen as well.

I have, very recently. I can't be sure, but I believe it was in IperSimply (ex CityPer). I don't know if there's one in the OPs's area, but probably worth a look if there is.

You can get everything you need to make it in the Moroccan run stores in Cassible. Same guys can probably get you the types of lamps you are looking for. They speak more English than your average Sicilian if language is a problem. Hummus is incredibly simple to make and once you do you won't want store bought. If you want to buy ready made Auchan has it too.

Wait for Lidl to do a greek week.
but surely it must be sold somewhere in Sicily -- why? We're in Sicily - the sicilians do not eat Greek food!

Auchan, Iperspa, the outdoor market in Ortigia- it's everywhere.

Sorry, just realised the ambiguity in my previous post. It's tahini that I was referring to, not hummus. And I agree with the others; once you make your own you'll never go back to the industrial stuff.

We've looked in Auchan and found no hummus, but when I am there next I will go back up to the market in Ortigia....

I've never found hummus in any of the supermarkets near me so I learnt to make my own ...... but like somebody else said&nbsp;.... not bloody easy to find tahini either. I have to go to a health/organic type shop where it costs a fortune so I brought some back from the UK last time I was there. Put too much garlic in my hummus last time and nearly blew the mouth off my daughter who put a very large dollop of it onto some bread and shoved the whole lot in her big mouth <img title="EEK!" class="inlineimg" alt="EEK!" src="http://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif" style="height:20px; width:18px" /> &nbsp; &nbsp;

Amazon.it has many versions of tahini and it comes right to my door. If all else fails in Eastern Sicily - head to http://www.cristaldi.it/ in Catania. They have anything and everything . There was a woman in there once who broke down sobbing because she found Golden Syrup. I just didn't get why she did not make it from scratch , it is so easy!

I make my own hummus (import Tahini from British Corner Shop), I make my own condensed milk too ....but..... how do you make syrup? Failed miserably with honeycomb toffee so wasted a lot of golden syrup. thanks

Golden syrup. He has a good recipe for condensed milk too, I would be lost without YouTube!
I love the honeycomb candy but humidity makes it difficult to always come out right.
If I don't have tahini around I substitute with some peanut butter. Works great. Lidl has it every so often and when they do I grab a case. I like the brand they carry because no added sugars or oils

You mean mere mortals can make golden syrup?? I bring mine over from the Uk by the vat. - bet you can't make marmite though!

Isn't that like Vegemite? Some Australian house guests tried to feed some to the Sicilian husband, didn't go down well!
