Healthcare in Italy

Hi
We are hoping to obtain residency in Italy. We own our house in the Comano area. We are in the process of gathering all the necessary documents but have found that because we have retired early with a private pension and don't receive a state pension (7 years away) we are not eligible for the S1 form and therefore require proof of a private healthcare plan. After searching for quotes, we find that private healthcare is very expensive.

If we did decide to take out private healthcare and became residents, does this mean that we would have to pay for private health care until we became eligible for state pension and obtain an S1?

Basically we don't want to forfeit the UK NHS to the pay for private healthcare in Italy.

Thanks in advance

It appears that you can buy into the public health system in Trento. You need to do that or obtain private health insurance.

If I were you I would buy into the public health system.
It is best to post in the Italian forum in future and you will get more information.

To legally use the NHS you need to be resident in the UK

You would have to pay for private health insurance for 5 years or until you reach state pension age - whichever comes first. I would add that assume you need 5 years with the way Brexit is going. You have until Dec 31 to sort out your residence.

As modicasa says unless you are resident in Italy by Dec 31st you will not be eligible for an S1 when you reach UK state pensioon age which is continually going up anyway
