No idea, but I'll google around if someone from Puglia doesn't pop in. Just wanted to say that weed killer is banned in Verona too and has been for years. The reason is because the water supply is very near the surface. You can't even buy weed killer, but you only have to pop over the border into Lombardy to get some.

Well our gardener obviously isn't aware of this - guess what he was doing this morning - nowhere near the fruit trees though.

I knew someone who kept a few rabbits, and during various times throughout the day had them in a very large circular wire fence thing which she'd move around the grass and they'd nibble away. Have no idea if this is ethical or not. The garden had plenty of shade and the person is a total animal lover, so hopefully it was a 'good thing' for the bunnies.
Weed killer is not used much here up north, don't know if it's illegal though.

Slightly off topic - when i kept a vegetable patch, and the green beans came under an insect invasion (no idea of insects name in italian or english) my neighbour made a concoction for me of tobacco soaked in half a litre of water overnight, which was then subsequently sprayed onto to beans over the next few days. It did clear up :-)

So is caffeine, both evolved in plants to discourage insects from eating the plants.

It is neither a stupid idea, .... nor an original one. There are a number of goat renting businesses in the USA, as goats are an eco-friendly and highly effective way of dealing with invasive weeds and other undergrowth/ vegetation issues, including poison ivy and thistles.
