Geo blocking by BBC
I have just found out that my VPN provider (Golden Frog) is now being blocked by sweet little old Auntie so, while I can get ITV and channel 5, iplayer is unavailable. Has anyone got any ideas to get round this? All thoughts appreciated.

Looks like VPN access is finished...
BBC begins blocking VPN access to iPlayer | Ars Technica UK Not surprising with 60 million unlicensed viewers. If the BBC could get just £10 out of each overseas viewer it would pay for all the over 75s in the UK. |

Use the FuseDNS service. They are in public beta. I'm watching BBC iPlayer in California in HD, surround sound with no buffering on my TV with an Xbox One... |

I read recently a report that the BBC were planning to do exactly this, but probably not before 2017

Re: Geo blocking by BBC
I don't think you can complain too much if you're not paying for the content. My gripe is that I do pay the licence as I'm in the UK for part of the year but can't access the service when I am not in the UK (without VPN) or some other fix. User name and password based on a licence serial number would seem to be a relatively easy fix, like Sky Go, for example.

Re: Geo blocking by BBC
I replied to this and for whatever the reason the moderator wouldn't let it pass. VPNs are not really very good for streaming for all sorts of reasons, but there are some good SmartDNS services out there which is the best solution available to unblock geo-restricted content with maximum quality and reliability (I'm using Fusebox.tv FuseDNS, which is in public beta).
Whichever service you use I believe the license fee is only required for watching the live streams. As a brit exiled in California I'd pay for the license fee *if it was possible*; 90% of what I watch is from the beeb. |

My iPlayer seems to be working fine at the moment. I'm using Private Internet Access. The iPlayer is installed on an Android media box.

The BBC have been busy blocking more VPNs to prevent illegal Xmas viewing.

Re: Geo blocking by BBC
I really don't understand why the BBC can't offer non-UK residents the opportunity to buy a TV licence electronically and log onto the iPlayer to watch. I know in parts of the US that the BBC's output is still revered and plenty of us living overseas still miss the odd programme.
I can't see who it hurts either. Aside from things like sports TV rights, most people taking the service are doing so because they can't speak the language well enough where they live to enjoy the TV so are RAI/Mediaset really going to miss those viewers? The current situation with TMS (cricket commentary) really annoys me. You can't listen online to TMS from overseas anymore, even though there is no such thing as a radio license and there don't seem to be too many rival broadcasters over here offering the same service.... |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
If you cant live without UK tv cant you just buy a sling box and send your legit paid for BBC content down the line?
|
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Reading wikipedia the Slingbox seems to rely on the idea that you have a licensed TV back home in the UK and the data is sent over the internet to Italy from your own TV.
If you dont have a TV in the UK and you are taking the BBC content from somebody else's TV then surely it is just as illegal as using a VPN and the BBC will try to switch it off. |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
yes, I thought the OP said he paid the licence fee in the Uk...but he didnt, that was someone else!

That site filmon is rather good!
thanks for the mention I use Surfeasy VPN normally but not often, filmon seems way better than messing around with a dynamic i.p |

I am using Private Internet Access and the 1st year subscription can be had for 30USD. Worked last night for both BBC and ITV live streaming services on my Minix android media player. |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Torguard works ok. It got blocked and they just gave me new DNS addresses.

Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Not quite an answer but may be useful:
I use ukproxy.tv with my broadband internet (I live over the border in Austria but am sure that does not make any difference). I mainly watch netflix but there are some sites that stream UK tv channels. The ukproxy.tv site also includes a USA proxy server - so it is far better to use that for netflix as they include UK TV series that are not available from the UK netflix site. I did try an Amazon firestick plugged into my TV and set to the proxy address but it was a really unreliable gadget and was a total waste of money so I dusted off an old PC and plugged that into my TV instead. |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Hi Duffer
I opted for Private Internet Access but still can't get the BBC. Is yours still OK? |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
I've just checked it and it is working fine, both iPlayer and ITV player. I'm using PIA openVPN for London if that helps.
|
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Hi Duffer
Could you check the server address you get for London with PIA? Mine is 104.238.169.92 and I cannot get iplayer on my laptop. Thanks |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
No mine starts with 83.
Are you using OpenVPN or PPTP? |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Hi Duffer
This is beyond my limited technical knowledge. All I have done is subscribe to PIA and accessed through their London and Southampton servers without success. What else should I be doing? Many thanks for your help. |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Why use iPlayer when there is YouP*rn? I just don't understand some people.
Well I have just tried the Southampton server at work and it's working fine for me. This is from a windows PC and connecting via the PIA software (the little green robot icon). At home I have OpenVPN London server installed only on my router and in the last 24hrs we have connected to iPlayer, ITV player, BT Sport and Sky Go from laptops, ipads and Android box. All working good. Try the Southampton option otherwise I found these instructions on PIA forum which might help - "The BBC has changed their service to require location sharing ini order to connect. This relies on stored cookies on your system. If you are unable to connect to the BBC player, please disconnect from the VPN, then clear cache and all cookies in your browser. Close the browser entirely, reconnect to the VPN, wait 30 seconds, and relaunch the browser. After that, go back to the BBC site, and say Yes to share location. This will generate a cookie using the new IP info from the VPN. This should allow you to connect to that service." |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Just use Filmon. Streaming in SD is free, and for $9 a month you can record and download 11 hours a month. sorry, you can record and download up to 11 hours at a time. Once downloaded, delete the programme from your recordings and the time is freed up to use again. works perfectly here in Philippines.

Re: Geo blocking by BBC
I pay less than half that amount for the VPN and stream in HD on my 50" TV. Why would I want Filmon? :p
|
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
Hi Duffer
Got it working thanks very much. Mrs Seldom thinks you're wonderful! |
Re: Geo blocking by BBC
For those of you that haven't tried Fusebox yet they have a discount code for reddit users (free through April 2016). Best service out there for streaming by far IMO--and I've tried pretty much all of the alternatives.
