Fixed IP
 

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a Fixed IP in southern Italy. Our IP is changing with such regularity it is ridiculous. 3 times in the last half hour alone.

Fastweb provide a static IP but it's charged on top of their standard internet package.

Can I ask why you need a fixed IP address? For your own website or some other type of server?

Usually your ISP provides an IP address each time you connect, i.e. a dynamic IP address, so yes it will change.

You could always forward your ports on your router so that incoming traffic is always directed to a static IP address on your home network?

We actually have an Internet Hosting business in the UK, so we understand the technicalities of it. Amongst other things are using our own UK server as a proxy to access Paypal etc. without being locked out. We never disconnect, never switch our modem off, and have a UPS so even when the power dips it stays on. Changing 3 times in the space of half an hour was very frustrating to say the least.

I am with fastweb and we do webdesign in the uk and have server there I have never (touch wood) had any problems with fastweb I for one think they are great..

Are you guys on a residential or a business tariff? Telecom Italia tell us we can have a fixed IP but only as a business. Really don't want to go down the line of having a business in Italy.

I definitely always have the same IP address I am using wicity , if I check my ip says "fastweb vernole" , I have no idea how it works as I using wifi which I believe is from the mobile phone mast as its aiming that way, I think when I signed up it mentioned static IP but its never concerned me and I usually am using a proxy so I can watch British TV, if its a big deal get an expert in who understands how it all works, my neighbours grandson set up my network and made it secure for free its his field and the instructions were in Italian

We understand how it works, it is our business, it is just that, unlike other countries, Telecom Italia will only give fixed IP's to business's, or so we are told. We have a fast fixed line connection, so don't want to go wireless, but the constant changing of IP is annoying to say the least.

I have not got a business account and I have tried several tests I certainly have a static IP address , I let someone configure my one as he is an IT expert at Lecce University and offered to do it I have set up networks before, constantly change IP address means you must be logging on and off , I you an expert already I am sure you will find a solution

No, we aren't logging on and off. We have a fixed telephone line, so don't want to go the wireless route. What we need is a Fixed Line supplier who will give us a fixed IP. I didn't say I was an expert, I said we understand how it works.

Are you absolutely sure about this? "static IP address" is a very precise technical description, meaning that the IP address is guaranteed not to change. The fact that it does not change proves nothing (mine - Telecom Italia - is not static but very, very rarely changes).

I'm afraid I can't help the OP either; I haven't looked into it because it is not one of my needs, but I don't know off-hand of any ISP that provides static IP addresses to private users.

The only ISP I know that provides a static IP for either private or business accounts is Fastweb. I have a private account.

The ISP for our work LAN also provides a static IP however this is thru hiperLAN (wireless) and I believe the ISP covers just the Veneto area.

I still don't understand how a dynamic IP is causing such a problem :confused:

Because we use our own proxy to access UK tv and often have 95% of a film downloaded when the IP changes on us.
