Finding a job in Sicily
 

Hello everyone!

I'm Angela and I will be moving over to Sicily in a few weeks time!!
I was wondering where was best to find jobs/work out there. I have heard it is difficult to find work there, but obviously hoping it's not too hard.
Moving to the mountain village of Piana degli Albanese, 30 mins from Palermo. My Italian isn't that great, but I am learning quickly.
Anyone have an websites, know of companies I can send my CV too, papers, ideas??

I'm sorry but I'd very surprised if you managed to find any job in a mountain village while speaking no Italian.

Well I've been here four months now and I found a job almost straight away! It is however teaching english/babysitting - there is loads of work teaching english here and it's a great way for me to learn Italian.

I was commissioned to do a painting for the Mayor here, who was very proud to have someone from England living in his village - generally I have found this here, the people really love the fact that I want to live in their village.

I do have other opportunities in the pipe line. For now I just wanted to say - you can have/do anything when you put your mind to it.

Go for it! You only live once.

Good luck to you. Everything gets better in Italy in Spring and Summer so you can look forward to some warm weather and fab fruit.

Are you an artist then? And what kind of picture did the Sindaco want?
I hope it wasn't a smug self portrait.
If I had to paint our local Mayor the painting would resemble one of those wilderness films where the guy lives with the grizzly bears. He fronted a meeting once about the new school lunch booking system wearing a dirty fleece, baggy jeans, Jesus sandals and he has a big hairy beard. I also heard him happily blaspheming under his breath when he sat next to me after his boring spiel.

How's your Italian then ......... or is it all local dialect?

Seems you have beaten me to a move to Sicily. i am glad you have settled into life there. What part have you moved to? I will be over soon for a property search . Looking for an area that is a little cooler in the summer than here in Malta.

I am moving to Italy in March/April, how hard/easy did you find getting accommodation?. I am having the devils own job in finding cheap apartments, so may have to change where I move to, any help would be appreciated.

Ciao Lorna é Caz,

Am in Sicily up in a mountain village - bl**dy cold just now, not as cold as the UK though, for the last few days it's been grey though :-(
There's still amazing fruit and veg here - I've never eaten so healthily!

A lady today asked me if I knew anyone (English) who can work with kids for the summer, so if you can put up with the little monkeys over here - you can taste a piece of Sicily - living/well working it for a while.

Thankfully the Sindaco didn't want a self portrait - I don't have canvas big enough!! Joking, he's ok/cool! And not mafia! ;-)

Getting there with my Italian - understand more than I speak, normal. The local dialect is horrible, abreshe - bo?!
For me, it's like Welsh - not interested (maybe because am being lazy), but Italian first, then perhaps a little sicilliano - languages not my forte!

Lorna - is the heat not like Malta here?
It's not up here in the mountains - haven't spent summer here yet, but when I got here (end of august) - twas really hot, I missed the 'real' heat. Palermo, scortching for me.

I'll do what I can to help - don't use any property estate agencies - they sell locally over here.

Hi both

Its good to be in contact with some 'locals'. Dont worry the weather has been fowl here too for the storm. However the sun is out this morning and a chance to dry out and take my horse for a ride. I see you dont recommend agents??? Why besides the commission of course. So if i come over how do i know which property is for sale from he locals??

Estate agents aren't too bad here, however I have been told that they do it through the local people (as I did), I actually got this house for 5000euros!! It has however been totally rebuild, but still inexpensive.
Try to make friends within a local community then just ask! Some houses do have the for sale signs, however many don't, best to ask the locals - but be very careful - being a foreigner - some people may try it on. If they do change the price, or mess you around in anyway - walk away straight away, this is not acceptable behaviour, and the locals don't touch people like this.
Of course - you can ALWAYS offer much much less.

It seems it just like here in Malta. I am planning a trip for 4 days in feb just to see how the land lies. I have several agent 2 from Malta and one in sicily sourcing property for me so i will start with them and see what i find on my visit.

Well I didnt find the ideal place yet but will be over in March to see again. However got offered plenty of work which I dont really need. Would find me new frinds in the community though.
