While I appreciate the forum is primarily for people who are resident in Italy, my problem relates to ENEL charges for a holiday apartment in Calabria - Uso Domestico Non Residente - Tariffa BIORARIA.
Our bill is paid by Direct Debit, and I have noticed an incomprehensible increase in the payments being deducted for our 3kw supply for 2017, even during periods when there has been no electricity consumed at all.
Can anybody explain these increases? My Italian is not good enough to speak to any ENEL personnel directly, so help would be appreciated.:fingerscrossed:

Probably TV licence fee. You pay up, and then try to get back if you don't have TV.

Think Modi posted about this either here or elsewhere... The standing charges have went up from Jan17 mega, but the rate per unit has went down...

There has been ahuge increase in the'oneri di sistema' , a completely incomprehensible charge. For example I have clients who paid about 25 euros evry two months for a unoccupied house whichhas gone up to 45 euros. The electricity part of the bill is 6 euros, the cost of trasnport! is 13 while the oneri are now 20+.

One of the good things about the open UK market now is the fact there are some companies that have deals that have no standing charges at all. You pay a little more per unit, but for those away a lot of the time it ends up much cheaper. Perhaps the recent attempt to change the market here will bring about similar changes/deals. Okay perhaps not :o

Thanks for the replies, which go a long way towards explaining the increased charges. We were paying approximately €25 per two months, but this increased in February, and again in April when we were charged €65.38. We have not used the apartment since December.

If we switched from a 3kw supply to something lower, what difference would that make to the bills? Things are getting a little out of hand here!

3Kw is now the minimum supply - it would be hard to get them to give you 1.5 - and anyway the oneri and trasporti will remain.

I’m sure some organisation here will be campaigning against the rise and may or may not be successful, or at least stop it going higher! I suspect it is part privatization, costly winters and a large number of people moving to solar.

Since 2007 when the open energy market in Italy was properly established there have been steps to bring it online with the rest of Europe. But this is slow.

There are over 200 energy companies across Europe. Italians and non-Italians over here either don't know where to look or can't be bothered. Italians tend not to trust switching suppliers. Expats are more open to it because they have experience back home.

The changeover process is smooth and since Jan 2017 for domestic size should be quick and without penalties. The EU pressed Renzi to legalise the quick changeover for domestic use.

Coming in as well in Italy is the standardisation of the distribution charge. This will be a fixed charge not dependent on consumption.
