Earthquake - Italy

Re: Earthquake - Italy
BBC and other media outlets report the deaths of 3 Brits, a couple and their friend's boy.
The parents and another child are in hospital, conditions unknown.
The H O has not confirmed this as yet. Let's hope the report is wrong.
Terrible for all involved.

Living here is BEAUTIFUL, but at times like this you wonder !! Three nights on the run we have made a run to the outside of the house.

Like the railway crash in Puglia where the province had been given money to make the railway safe but for some reason never did it; Lazio was given Euro 10 million to improve properties subject to earthquakes but only spent 3million.
Moreover second homes couldn't be repaired with public money because it is against the law.

A worry just feeling the house shake here, do hope there is not too much more for those further North to cope with. Report here on the Corriere site. Seems to be getting updated on a regular basis, fingers crossed not because of more.

It is bad enough here 70 miles south of the latest, feel really sorry for those in the area as the damage looks horrible. We knew before we came quakes were bad here, but 4 major shakes of the house here in the last few months makes us wonder again!

Re: Earthquake - Italy
I'm about 80 miles south of the epicentre & was having coffee on the terrace when it happened. The shaking went on for what felt like ages. Neighbours rushing outside, everyone was very frightened and distressed. It's a long time since I've trembled with fear but this morning I did.
I'm so sad for this lovely country but not moving back to the UK as my children want me to.

Thinking of you from Christchurch, N.Z.
Right now things must seem awful and scary, but the people here are nearly six years out from the Canterbury and Christchurch earthquakes. Recovery is happening, the aftershocks *touch wood* have died down and life is going on. I hope the same can be said for Italy after this sequence shakes itself out.

I simply hope this is the very last of quakes and aftershocks. Italy has had more than enough.
Italy is a lovely historical place and it is so sad to see all the destruction. Not to mention the toll on people.
Stay safe .

Must be incredibly draining to have to live with the stress of never knowing whether the earth is going to shake every day and whether the next one might bring your house down. I can't imagine anyone in that region can have slept more months. I don't think I could cope with the uncertainty.
On the upside, it does seem (from an uninformed outsider's point of view) that the situation is being pretty well managed at the moment, clearing people from damaged homes, getting rescuers into remote areas quickly and restoring services as soon as possible. Hopefully lessons have been learned from L'Aquila in terms of recovery now....
