Re: Driving Licence
The Italian authority cannot extend a licence issued by the DVLA. You can exchange it at great cost though. :)
Do you have a UK licence? Are you almost 70 years old? Then you should have received a reminder to the UK address on the licence. You'll get a new licence valid for 3 years sent to the UK address. On the reminder, they'll mention if they need a new photo. Either way, this should be free of charge. Regarding your daughter's licence, I presume she has had the same UK one since she arrived in 1994, which, unless it's a paper licence or she renewed the photocard whilst in the UK at some point, must've expired in 2004 or earlier and means that the Carabinieri just couldn't be bothered filling out the paperwork and didn't notice the expiry date on the front. |
Re: Driving Licence
To get your license renewed here you first need to convert it to an Italian one. As Duffy said, it's far more expensive here and after 70 it has to be renewed every 3 years.
To be legal here a UK europeon license doesn't need to be converted, but you should get it recognized by the Italian authorities. This involves a sticky thing with your address to apply to your license. However, there is no place for it on a UK license so you would have to convert it to an Italian one first.:( A member of BE did get grief from the CC a while back because he hadn't done this. |
Re: Driving Licence
:)You can 'do the 70 thing' on line with DVLA if you visit the UK frequently enough to have residence there to collect it; or have someone send it out to you. Preferably at the same address as that shown on the old paper licence. You also need to have a current passport and give DVLA permission to scan out the passport photo to apply to photocard Eurolicence.

Re: Driving Licence
Thanks, everyone.
I will stick with the UK licence, of course. I have the photo licence, issued in 2003 - never noticed that before - so I am OK on the 10 year rule. Will start to check with the present resident at "my" address - bit slack at personal admin - ref the replacement. Have just checked with Daughter. She came out with a paper licence, replaced it with a photo licence in 2005 and has a her 60th birthday as an expiry date. Where does the photo rule come in? Membership of the EC must require civil servants to operate to the lowest common denominator! Last word on photos, the DVLA web site says they can use joined-up-government to access you passport photo if the passport was issued in the last 5 years. Has anyone else noticed that more and more UK gov. departments are using the classic dictatorship term "residence"? Or am I paranoid? |
Re: Driving Licence
:)Check out your expiry date. In spite of the 10 year 'photo rule' it will expire on your 70th. birthday if that comes earlier.

Re: Driving Licence
Thanks, that was the one fact I was already sure of, that the licence expired on my birthday.

Re: Driving Licence
In case it will help anyone else, I applied on line to change the address on my UK driving licence to the UK address the Tax Man uses.
The DVLA website - very easy to find your way around - came back with "Since your licence is about to expire, why not renew it at the same time?". So I have done. I had thought that a doctor's cert was required (70) but no, you self-certify. I will, though, have to change the photo in 2013. |
Re: Driving Licence
So basically you changed your photo and address all online? How much did it all cost in time and money?
|
Re: Driving Licence
No, changed the address and extended the licence beyond the 70 age-point. The photo I will have to do in time; since my passport is more than 5 years old (and DVLA can't lift the photo from the Passport Office)I will have to send a new photo by post eventually.
Cost zero and took 10 minutes. It is a really punter-friendly site. |
