Criminal Record Certificate

Im getting lots of conflicting info about this - unsurprisingly from the bureaucrats.
Here's my problem - you need a CR cert from the UK (standard, normal, or pro version???) for the citizenship application which then, AFAIK, has to go to Milton Keynes to be legalized. I called one of the UK Gov numbers who seem to be a privatized service (they were very polite on the phone at 800 number rates) - and said I didn't need one - I think they were thinking of US visa applications - and didn't know much about labyrinthine Italian paper shuffling.

Italian office tells me it has to be valid from the day I was born - toddler crime wave obviously in Sicily - and it isn't the one from the local copshop.

HAs anyone done all this - i.e. - Penal certificate, legalization and so on?
