Default A couple of days in Napoli

Stopping in Naples for a couple of days. I have been to Pompeii a few times and want to visit the archeological museum, also want to do the Bourbon tunnels. Any other 'must see' things? We will be coming back in future, so don't have to cram everything into one visit.

The best Napoli Sotteranea is on Via Tribunali which will let you also see the roman amphitheatre under the street.
I would advise the capodimonte art gallery, with the caravaggio san sabeastiano. Not to miss is the capella San Severo with the veiled christ, a private chapel off Via Tribunale and Via Nilo, which is stunning and were it in another city would be the top thing to see.
If you like Pompei the. try also the Campi Flegrei out at Pozzuoli, and the aamphitheatre there.

The archaelogical museum is a must, though don't get too excited about the "naughty" exhibits behind locked doors. As a lover of intarsia I had to visit the chirch of Sant'Anna dei Lombardi, where the Sacristry has the most wonderful work by Fra Giovanni da Verona. The Sacristry is better known for its frescoes by Vasari, though IMHO they are mediocre. The chuch was originally part of a Montolivetan monastery: the order to which Fra Giovanni belonged. I have to confess that this recommendation may be thought a tad esoteric, when there are so many other treasures in Naples, including of course some great Caravaggios. But I wouldn't have missed Sant'Anna for the world.
BTW Herculaneum is just as interesting as Pompeii, and gives a quite different perspective

Never got around to Herculaneum. I'll have to give it a go.

Thank you for the advice

I used to live virtually next to Sant'Anna - and am very partial to the terracotta lifesize presepe which is 15th (?) century but looks like it was done last week. If yougo to Herculaneum the villa dei misteri is currently closed.

Villa Poppaea at Torre Annunziata is well worth a visit. The surroundings are not very inviting but the villa is incredible. If it was in the centre of Rome it would be a top tourist attraction.

If youre there on a tuesday morning you could always go and see the miracle of Santa Patrizia. She's very good and liquefies her blood at 10 am every tuesday, much more reliable than San Gennaro.

I looked this up and there seems to be some confusion whether the miracle happens on a Friday at 3pm or Tuesday at 10am.

Naples was amazing! Such a lively city with a real sense of 'self'. We made the mistake of taking our car with us, thinking we'd be able to find the apartment using a combination of satnav and google maps as we usually do. Not a chance. Fortunately our host came to meet us on his moped and guided us to his home. I don't want to fall foul of the advertising guidelines so won't give names, but would happily recommend if asked.
Car securely locked away and map in hand we hit the streets. Every time we paused to check our bearings on our map, we were asked if we were OK, "Are you lost?" "Do you need help?"
We went to the Archeological museum and spent a couple of hours enjoying that, then walked around the city, just admiring the views and architecture.
We'll be back many times.
