Caring for the land during lockdown..
 

By this time I'm starting to be quite worried about the state of my garden in Italy as I'm stuck here in England and can do nothing about it. I was just wondering what the position is at the moment regarding all those little plots around me in Puglia where no one actually lives but which are usually kept well tended and weed free. Is everyone in the same boat as me, not being able to get to their land to strim or weedkill if they live elsewhere. ?

Is this also the case for the Italians because they're not allowed to travel more than 200m from their actual homes..?

Are all the little plots of land now becoming thick jungles of thorny weeds..?

Surely not as it will be a major fire hazard come the summer..

Can someone enlighten please..?

In Tuscany people are - I think!! - allowed to leave their homes to look after their veg. Here's an extract from the Regione FAQ

Sì, chi si dedica alle attività agricole in via amatoriale può svolgere le operazioni colturali che la stagione impone e che sono necessarie per tutelare le produzioni vegetali e può, inoltre, accudire gli animali allevati. Lo spostamento all’interno del comune e verso altri comuni può essere giustificato con autocertificazione "per necessità" purché sia effettuato non più di una volta al giorno, da massimo due componenti per nucleo familiare.

Sì, è possibile basta avvenga solamente una volta al giormo e lo spostamento sia determinato da una situazione di necessità di assoluta urgenza e salvo diverse disposizione dei Sindaci del Comune interessato.

The regione Puglia has recently allowed people to to attend to their land for necessary work even if the land is in a different comune

Umbria had the restrictions raised on Saturday. You still have to be able to prove that you are travelling to your land and only one person is supposed to travel in a car. People dont seem to be doing much in my village.
You have a good point about fire risk. In our area there have been quite a few fires on agricultural properties. We have had no rain since December.
There was a terrible accident in Bastardo in Umbria. A man and his wife took their 3 dogs for walk in the fields near his house. His dog jumped in a little stream and couldn't get out. The man went to rescue the dog and he was killed with electricity. The police blame criminals who cut the copper wires down from a poll but I wonder if the electric company has given up with maintenance during the crisis.

Sounds like a nightmare. I guess the thieves must have left the live end lying in the field for someone to come along and step on it. Nasty way to go indeed.. Although they must have been pretty smart themselves to avoid getting zapped when they were doing the thieving... I don't know how they would have managed that without specialist equipment.. Always seems to be the innocent who suffer for the actions of lowlife doesn't it..

Yes, my garden weeds will be 3-4 feet high now but still green, the problem arises if they're left to die back and dry out, that'll be around the end of June by which time they will be anything up to 6ft high and all it takes in the summer is a spark..

Nationally, from last Monday, it i permitted to travel to tend land and reduce fire risk, even ifit is in a different comune. This means that fines for not doing so will not be lifted. Here in Sicily you have till June 3 to sort out your land and burn weeds. It will be virtually the same in the other southern regions.
