As a UK citizen but a holder of an Italian residency card can I fly Italy to Barcelona even though my UK passport expires in December?
Grateful for any in depth knowledge.

I think ID cards issued in Italy to a non Italian citizen are usually marked "Non Valide per Espatrio" or similar -my Italian is a bit rusty - so do not rely just on your ID card

I think LVC is right ? But......my understanding is that the 'permesso di soggiorno elettronico' which is available to residents who are non citizens allows travel across the Schengen states? I have not used mine to date though.

As far as I know, your UK passport must have at least 6 months validity. You cannot travel on an Italian ID card which is not valid for overseas.

It doesn't. It is not a travel document. It is not even mandatory. Your (our) Italian ID cards never gave us right of travel if not citizens so why would a new bit of paper or plastic give us those rights? The new CARTA di soggiorno just proves that we were resident before Brexit so please don't stamp my British passport because I am not a 90 day tourist and I live here.

No, your passport is from a ‘third’ country, so you need to have the 6 months on your passport. The Italian residency card makes no difference to that as it doesn’t give you the same rights as an EU passport holder across all countries.

As always I bow down to your vastly superior knowledge seriously........After chatting with my 'boss', I have been informed that we did indeed use our new CARTA di soggiorno, not sure what plural is there !

We travelled to the UK earlier this year, only showed our passports on the way there. On the way back, in the UK, we showed our passports at check in. On arrival in Rome, we showed only our new CARTA di soggiorno they were given a very cursory by the chappie at the desk.

Your CARTE (plural feminine) di soggiorno basically told the chappie on the desk that you are resident in Italy and that really he did not need to see your passport,You used your passport to travel and the CDS to get back into Italy as I see it

If you look at the advice for Americans travelling to Italy it says you must have 3 months on your passport at the day you exit Italy but they recommend 6 months.

The chappie on the desk should have indeed checked all passports or ID cards and the CDS only as a secondary document. That's what happened to me at Christmas time. I travelled with my Italian son. Maybe it was MY fault for stopping the border officer when he wanted our passports and I said in Italian : please don't stamp our passports as my son is italian and I have the residenza permanente............but apart from that which came secondary - it was PASSPORT control.

We did not have our passports out of our cases when we re-entered at Rome. As mentioned it was a cursory glance at our CDSs.

It does raise a question in my mind, going back to the original poster's query......

As the CDS 'proves' my status as an Italian resident, therefore resident in a Schengen country (?)................does that mean (as I understand it does), that I can travel to and from other Schengen countries passport free?
