Hmmm that I dont know. If you have an Italian passport then you're italian and they cant refuse you. If you are resident theoretically they should let you in, but would the UK let you out - if you see what I mean. Plus coming in on an id card from a EE country should be impossible as youd be in the EE queue at the airport

Someone has asked the same question on thelocal. They say you enter Italy with an Id card and the UK with a passport.
It is not clear whether it remains true after October 2021.

Ithink its pretty impossible to get from the entrance to your plane without showing your id at least 4 times. Or do you have diplomatic immunity or a private jet ?

There are three points of control, operated by the airline (check-in and gate) and Border Force, each of which have slightly different objectives.
The airline controls are the more difficult to cuff; my experience has been that, if you want to leave a country (and your name doesn't set off alarm bells), the authorities will leave it to the receiving State to sort out your paperwork.

Well, anyway I think for the time being it’s safer to stay in Italy than the UK.
